Senior Database Developer

Description We are seeking a Senior Database Developer with 10+ years of experience in Microsoft Access and cloud-native SQL to lead the migration of legacy Access databases into modern, high-performance SQL platforms. This role will work closely with program users to analyze existing data structures, design and execute schema transformations, ETL pipelines, validation checks, and cut-over plans, and guide stakeholders through a seamless data transition.
Responsibilities
Lead the migration of legacy Access databases into modern, high-performance SQL platforms.
Work with program users to analyze existing data structures.
Design and execute schema transformations and ETL pipelines.
Implement validation checks and cut-over plans for a seamless data transition.
Collaborate with stakeholders to ensure successful data migration and adoption.
Required Skills
Proven experience designing, developing, and maintaining advanced MS Access databases (tables, normalized structures, queries, forms, reports)
Expert relational database design, normalization, ER modeling, schema refactoring, and translating Access data models to scalable SQL schemas
Microsoft Access experience including table design, complex queries, forms, reports, and VBA for custom functionalities and workflow automation
Migrating legacy databases into cloud SQL platforms (Azure SQL Database/Managed Instance, PostgreSQL, AWS RDS for SQL Server/MySQL)
ETL tool experience (SSIS, Azure Data Factory, AWS DMS)
Creating migration runbooks, data dictionaries, technical documentation, and delivering training/knowledge-transfer
Experience with RDBMS admin/console tools (TOAD, SSMS, SQL Developer)
Configuring data integration and batch processing solutions in Azure Data Factory/SSIS; monitoring data ingestion and query performance
Migrating data from legacy database to new target database
Preferred Skills
Hands-on experience with CI/CD methodology, GitHub, JIRA
Experience with data visualization/reporting tools (Power BI, Tableau)
Experience with Agile development methodologies
Prior experience in healthcare or public health
Experience implementing agile methodologies and best practices for one or more State of Texas Agencies
