Job Description: We are seeking a Senior Database Developer with 10+ years of experience in Microsoft Access and cloud-native SQL to lead the migration of legacy Access databases into modern, high-performance SQL platforms. This role will work closely with program users to analyze existing data structures, design and execute schema transformations, ETL pipelines, validation checks, and cut-over plans, and guide stakeholders through a seamless data transition.
Responsibilities
Lead the migration of legacy Microsoft Access databases to modern SQL platforms. Analyze existing data structures, relationships, and business logic to design schema transformations. Develop and maintain ETL pipelines, data validation checks, and cut-over strategies for production migration. Perform logical and physical data modeling, prototyping, and relational database design. Monitor and optimize database performance, including distribution of records, memory usage, and query efficiency. Conduct performance tuning and recommend database efficiency improvements. Implement and manage database security, recovery procedures, and disaster recovery strategies. Ensure data integrity, control redundancy, and enforce data standards across environments. Maintain data dictionaries and set standards for consistent use across applications. Create and manage test database environments for development and validation. Assist in the installation, configuration, and upgrade of database software. Provide technical guidance and training to programmers, analysts, and end users. Ensure compliance with EIR Accessibility standards and assistive technologies in database interfaces and reporting. Collaborate with users and coworkers to assess the impact of database changes on systems and staffing costs. Support benchmarking, threshold testing, and software selection for database solutions. Qualifications
Overall 10+ years of experience: Proven experience in designing, developing, and maintaining advanced MS Access databases, including the creation of normalized table structures, sophisticated queries for data extraction and manipulation, intuitive data entry forms, and comprehensive reports. Expert-level relational database design, normalization, ER modeling, schema refactoring, and translating Access data models into scalable SQL schemas. Experience with Microsoft Access, including table design, complex queries, forms, reports, and leveraging VBA for custom functionalities and workflow automation. Experience with migrating legacy databases into at least one major cloud SQL service (Azure SQL Database/Managed Instance, PostgreSQL, AWS RDS for SQL Server/MySQL). ETL tool experience with SSIS, Azure Data Factory, AWS Database Migration Service (DMS), or equivalent. Creating migration runbooks, data dictionaries, technical documentation, and delivering training or knowledge-transfer sessions. Experience with RDBMS admin/console tools such as TOAD, SSMS and/or SQL Developer. Configuring data integration and batch processing solutions in Azure Data Factory and/or SSIS; monitoring data ingestion processes and performance; reviewing query plans and identifying problem areas in execution plans. Migrating data from legacy database to new target database.
