Our client is a privately held, full-service real estate investment and management firm based in the San Mateo County/Bay Area with assets in over a dozen of the fastest growing real estate markets in the country.
The Controller position will be responsible for daily oversight of the organization’s daily accounting operations, which includes accounts payable, accounts receivable, cash investments, bank reconciliations, payroll, tax compliance and financial reporting. This role serves as the primary liaison to the firm’s outsourced accounting team, tax advisors, and auditors.
The Controller is responsible for the timely preparation and submission of accurate financial statements for multiple properties, some affiliated entities, and the overall company. Working in conjunction with the Company’s tax advisors, the Controller ensures compliance with and reporting as required to meet local, state, and federal tax requirements.
The ideal candidate will have a detailed understanding of GAAP (utilized in conjunction with the Company’s accounting policies), experience working with both commercial and multifamily properties, familiarity with Yardi, and the ability to utilize Microsoft Excel to prepare additional reports and analyses.
Responsibilities
Supervise the daily accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, cash management, investments, and payroll, in collaboration with the Assistant Controller and the outsourced accounting team. Provide training and development for internal and external team members as needed. Establish and implement short and long-range goals for the Accounting Department. Maintain accounting policies and procedures and internal controls to minimize risk. Lead the implementation of accounting policies across departments and regional management companies, as needed. Enhance and improve the department’s use of Yardi real estate software, Microsoft Excel, and other software as appropriate to satisfy the company’s accounting and reporting requirements. Oversee the timely and accurate monthly accounting close. Ensure that regional management companies submit accurate monthly financial statements in compliance with GAAP and company policies. Analyze the impact of foreign exchange fluctuations on financial statements, ensuring appropriate adjustments for consolidation and reporting. Prepare financial reports for Board of Directors meetings, including forecasts, variance analyses, and shareholder distribution recommendations. Develop and monitor financial benchmarks to assess company performance and identify opportunities for cost reduction. Provide financial analysis for capital investments and budgets, as well as monitor construction-in-progress expenditures. Collaborate with management on developing short-term and long-term financial objectives and strategies. Review financial details from past, present, and forecasted operations & identify where reporting improvements can be made. Prepare such financial reports as necessary to aid management in understanding the financial state of the company’s business. Understand the financials of the company in order to meet legal requirements & keep the financial state in good standing. Tax Compliance & Regulatory Reporting
Maintain current knowledge of organizational procedures, federal and state regulations, and accounting standards. Collaborate with external auditors to provide information needed for the annual audit. Work with the Company’s tax advisors to prepare and submit all tax returns. Responsible for local, state, and federal tax compliance and reporting (including payroll, property, and sales and use tax compliance and reporting). Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required. Certified Public Accountant or Certified Management Accountant designation highly preferred. Ten (10) years or more of related experience required. Multi-family Residential & Commercial real estate industry experience required. Proficient with accounting software, preferably Yardi. Proficiency in Microsoft Office, with advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel (e.g., data connections, formulas, and reporting skills) required. Familiarity with Rippling or a similar payroll system a plus. Personal Skills & Attributes
