A privately held real estate investment firm is seeking an Assistant Controller to support its transition into a next-generation investment and asset management platform. With a diverse portfolio spanning multifamily, commercial, retail, affordable housing, senior living, and specialty assets, this role offers exposure to a wide range of real estate investment types. As part of a well-capitalized, growth-focused organization, you’ll play a key role in financial reporting oversight, process improvement, and supporting acquisitions and development initiatives.
Responsibilities
Oversee and review financial reporting prepared by third-party property management firms, ensuring accuracy, GAAP compliance, and consistency. Analyze property-level results, monitor budget-to-actual performance, and provide insights to leadership. Manage internal accounting functions including fixed asset tracking, reconciliations, and journal entry approvals. Support system enhancements, reporting automation, and ERP upgrades (RealPage/Intacct platform). Lead process improvement efforts to streamline property-level financial oversight. Collaborate with finance and asset management teams on portfolio performance, acquisitions, and dispositions. Supervise and mentor a team of two senior accountants. Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required. CPA required; 6+ years of combined public/private accounting experience. Real estate industry experience required; exposure to portfolios of 50+ properties strongly preferred. Strong knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting, and real estate accounting. Experience managing teams and reviewing financial packages prepared by third parties. Proficiency with accounting platforms such as RealPage, Intacct, or Yardi. Excellent communication skills with the ability to collaborate across functions. Preferred Experience
Multifamily or affordable housing background. Experience with CAM reconciliations, system conversions, or process improvements. Prior work in growth-oriented environments undergoing organizational transformation. Seniority level
