Job Summary: The Director of Transportation is responsible for leading and managing the company’s transportation operations, including vehicle fleet maintenance, to ensure timely, safe, and cost-effective delivery of goods. This role oversees route planning, logistics coordination, maintenance shop operations, regulatory compliance, staff management, and budget control. The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of transportation logistics and shop maintenance, exceptional leadership capabilities, and a proactive approach to problem-solving and continuous improvement. Supervisory Responsibilities

Supervise transportation staff including drivers, dispatchers, and administrative personnel; provide leadership, training, and performance evaluations. Delegate tasks and responsibilities effectively to ensure smooth operations and optimal productivity. Set clear performance expectations and goals for production staff, aligned with overall departmental objectives. Conduct performance evaluations and provide ongoing training and feedback to team members to support their professional development. Oversight of Hickman’s Family Farms Fleet and Equipment. Duties/Responsibilities

Develop and implement transportation strategies, policies, and procedures that align with organizational goals. Oversee daily planning, scheduling, and execution of delivery routes and freight shipments. Monitor and manage transportation budgets, identifying cost-saving opportunities and operational efficiencies. Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local transportation regulations, including DOT and OSHA standards. Track key performance indicators (KPIs) and produce reports to identify trends and areas for improvement. Manage third-party transportation providers, negotiate contracts with carriers and brokers, and maintain positive vendor relationships. Investigate and resolve service disruptions, including delays, damages, safety incidents, or claims. Manage freight claims and ensure appropriate follow-up and resolution. Remain on-call 24/7 to respond to urgent issues, including driver absences, after-hours disruptions, or emergencies. Participate in weekly logistics meetings and monthly accounting, safety, and maintenance meetings. Coordinate cross-functional communication and collaboration with logistics, accounting, and safety departments. Develop and manage the annual transportation budget; monitor expenses and approve expenditures. Lead the creation and implementation of transportation-related safety programs and training initiatives. Monitor transportation performance metrics and implement continuous improvement strategies. Physical Requirements

Must be able to sit or stand for extended periods in an office and dispatch environment. Occasionally required to walk through warehouse or yard areas, inspect equipment or loading procedures. Ability to stand for prolonged periods of time. Ability to lift up to 25 pounds occasionally. Must be able to respond to calls or emergencies during off-hours, including weekends and holidays. Required Skills/Abilities

Proven ability to lead, mentor, and manage diverse teams effectively. In-depth understanding of transportation systems, logistics, and compliance standards. Strong data analysis and decision-making skills. Ability to develop and manage departmental budgets and financial plans. Excellent communication, vendor negotiation, and interpersonal skills. Strong conflict resolution, troubleshooting, and crisis management capabilities. Proficient in transportation management software, route planning systems, and MS Office Suite. Education/Experience

CDL Class A license, preferred. Bachelor's degree in Transportation Management, Logistics, Supply Chain, Business Administration, or related field (required). Minimum of 4 years of progressively responsible experience in transportation or logistics operations. Minimum of 2 years of supervisory or management experience in a transportation environment. Experience servicing fleet vehicles to ensure optimal performance and adherence to safety and operational standards. Experience managing third-party logistics providers and negotiating service contracts. Knowledge of DOT, FMCSA, and OSHA compliance regulations.
