WSF division of WSDOT is currently seeking a detail-driven and collaborative Transportation Engineer 2 (TE2). In this role, you will apply engineering principles to support vessel maintenance and repair activities that keep our fleet safe, reliable, and ready for service. You will track and coordinate vessel engineering work orders from initiation to close-out and administer consultant agreements that support critical engineering and maintenance projects. Your work will directly impact the timely completion of regulatory-compliant maintenance essential for vessel operational readiness. What to Expect
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, you/the Transportation Engineer 2 will: Initiate, coordinate, develop, track, amend, and close out Vessel Engineering & Maintenance (VEM) work orders — including setting up and balancing work orders, updating for contract cost/schedule changes, and producing work order status reports. Coordinate work order processing with WSF Finance & Administration and VEM Business Group Capital, Operating, and Federal Funding Program Management staff and Project Administrators to ensure timely execution and compliance. Understand instructions and timelines to manage time, plan projects, adapt to changing priorities, and meet deadlines independently or as part of a team. Think strategically and implement solutions while maintaining established operating policies; ensure accuracy and timeliness of information provided to stakeholders. Compose and publish reports, letters, and other documentation related to work orders and VEM activities. Coordinate VEM consultant task orders — draft/amend task orders, review invoices, track expenditures, process agreements/amendments, maintain files, and prepare task order status reports. Collaborate with WSF Finance & Administration Consultant Department to authorize invoice payments, monitor budgets, and close out consultant agreements. required : Engineering & Project Accounting Knowledge
Applies engineering principles to set up, track, amend, and close work orders; understands cost control and proper funding allocation.
Capital & Operating Budget Management
Builds, tracks, and reconciles budgets and expenditures for capital/operational projects.
Work Order & Financial System Proficiency
Uses (or can quickly learn) state work order and financial management systems to initiate and maintain projects.
Invoice Review & Cost Reconciliation
Reviews consultant invoices for accuracy, compliance, and alignment with task orders and budgets.
Technical Software Skills
Proficient in MS Office Suite and financial data/reporting tools to produce accurate reports and documentation.
Strategic Problem Solving & Adaptability
Plans work, adjust to changing priorities, and resolve project issues while maintaining policy compliance.
Professional Communication (Written & Oral)
Produces clear reports, memos, and correspondence; communicates effectively with technical and financial staff.
Records & File Management
Maintains organized, compliant documentation for work orders, task orders, and consultant agreements.
It is
preferred
that qualified candidates also have: Advanced Education in Technical or Financial Fields
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in engineering, finance, public/business administration, economics, or a related field.
Government or Transportation Sector Experience
Prior work in public agencies, transportation systems, or large capital project environments.
Washington State Capital Program Knowledge
Familiarity with state statutes, policies, and procedures governing capital programs and projects.
Public Contracting & Procurement Expertise
Understanding of state contracting, budgeting systems, and compliance requirements for consultant task orders.
Legislative & Policy Awareness
Knowledge of funding processes, policy development, and legislative program management impacting capital projects.
Maritime/Vessel Maintenance Familiarity
Understanding of vessel maintenance practices, terminology, and operational context relevant to VEM work.
Important Notes This position offers flexible/hybrid remote work options. The salary listed includes the legislative approved 5% salary premium for positions in King County. In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position. For union-represented positions, more information on other forms of compensation can be found in the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreements. Information on other compensation types for non-represented positions can be found in Chapter 357-28 of the Washington Administrative Code.
