Director of Operations Fellow
is a full‑time position that prepares you to become a Director of Operations (DOO) of an Uncommon school. As DOO, you will lead a school in partnership with the Principal, working together to ensure students receive an exemplary education. The fellowship is based on four core elements aligned to the competencies of Uncommon leaders: Fellowship Deliverables and School Immersion; Evaluation and Feedback; Operations Leadership Meetings; and Professional Development. The fellowship typically lasts one year, but may range from a few weeks to more than a year depending on regional needs and development progress. Fellows should expect to work in multiple locations and grades within the region, with placement based on regional needs and Fellows’ growth areas. Responsibilities
Serve as a full‑time member of the host school’s operations team and engage in Uncommon‑wide operations projects. Conduct observations and analysis of operational systems to identify improvement opportunities. Complete a variety of pre‑determined deliverables designed to support leadership development, including an Immersion where the Fellow acts as DOO in place of the host DOO for 4–6 weeks (host DOO is offsite). Receive coaching and feedback through an Individualized Development Plan, focusing on strengths and growth areas. Participate in Operations Leadership Meetings with current DOOs, other Fellows, and cross‑organization peers to share learnings and solve operational challenges. Engage in professional development starting in the summer, covering Cultural Leadership, Management, and Operational Leadership topics. Qualifications
Passionate commitment to the mission of Uncommon Schools and to improving students’ minds, characters, and lives. Ability to strategically manage time and tasks with a systems‑thinking approach; thrive in a fast‑paced environment; able to work autonomously and take direction as needed. Comfort with ambiguous situations and ability to move toward clarity and solutions. Willingness to learn and do what it takes to ensure high‑quality operations despite obstacles. Proactive, strategic problem‑solver capable of balancing competing priorities; strong communication and relationship‑building skills with teachers, students, families, vendors, and colleagues. Ability to have difficult conversations respectfully. Excellent computer skills (Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, Access). Dedication to self‑reflection and ongoing professional growth. School‑based or other educational experience preferred; experience managing others preferred. Required experience: 4+ years of work experience; at least 1 year coaching/leading/managing others (e.g., Special Projects Manager, Associate Director of Operations, Instructional Leader, or similar); project planning with a record of completing large projects; experience in K‑12 school operations preferred; Bachelor’s degree.
