At Uncommon Schools, our Deans of Curriculum & Instruction (DCIs) are school leaders focused on supporting teachers and instructional leaders to deliver the most rigorous and joyful academic experience for our students that leads to exceptional academic gains. DCIs play a central role in the success of their school and work closely with their Principal and fellow DCIs across Uncommon in driving student achievement and Teacher Development.
Responsibilities
Data-Driven Instruction: conduct deep data analysis to lead effective data meetings; build action plans, materials, and systems to address data; facilitate Interim Assessment scoring and norming; develop pre- and post-analysis of IAs; support Instructional Leaders with data analysis.
Monitor progress against assessment cycle benchmarks; facilitate assessment cycles with quality assurance of materials, teacher/student preparation, and scheduling; collaborate with the Director of Operations.
Regional and network data analysis and response systems support.
Feedback and Teacher Development: conduct daily observations, integrate feedback into planning and data meetings; provide real-time feedback during instruction; lead mid-year reviews; plan and deliver high-quality professional development; run team meetings; coach ILs and lead IL Team Meetings; oversee data response curriculum; curate staff-wide PD; support mid-year onboarding.
School Culture: plan or lead whole-school moments and initiatives; manage school-wide academic systems; model culture and rigor techniques.
Support Curriculum and Instruction Initiatives: plan and facilitate network or regional PD; support network initiatives related to student achievement and curriculum development.
Mission Alignment: demonstrate commitment to improving students’ minds and lives; support school/region needs; participate in inspections and walkthroughs; collaborate with Home Office and other staff to maximize student academic and socio-emotional development.
Qualifications
Passionate commitment to the mission of Uncommon Schools;
Ability to plan and lead effective teacher professional development;
Strong teaching skills and proficiency in lesson plan development;
Strong people management skills and ability to navigate difficult conversations; hold staff, scholars, and families accountable in a supportive manner;
Systems-based thinking and experience creating academic and teacher development systems;
Ability to manage time and tasks with a focus on district or network-wide systems;
Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment, be autonomous, and take direction as needed;
Familiarity with Uncommon’s core tenets of instructional leadership (e.g., See It-Name It-Do It, Leverage Leadership principles).
Required Experience
3+ years of teaching experience with evidence of outstanding student growth and achievement;
Demonstrated instructional coaching capabilities; strong content knowledge across multiple grades/panels or content areas;
Bachelor’s Degree.
Compensation & Benefits Compensation for this role is between $87,000 to $130,000. Most candidates who meet job description requirements will receive an offer of $87,000 - $97,400. Starting pay is determined using factors including relevant professional development, education certifications, and tenure with Uncommon Schools.
Generous paid time off including sick time, holidays, and 10 weeks of paid breaks.
