The American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) is the nation’s leading cancer advocacy organization. We work in Congress, state legislatures, and local jurisdictions to support evidence-based policy and legislative solutions designed to eliminate cancer as a major health problem. This is a remote position with a required base location in the Richmond, Virginia area.
Major Responsibilities
Mission/Issue Campaigns: Drive mission policy and appropriations wins in Virginia; act as an ambassador to the state legislature, governor, state agencies, congressional offices, and donors; establish legislative priorities and develop supporting materials aligned with ACS CAN policy positions; lead and manage issue campaigns and campaigns in Virginia; lead fundraising efforts toward ACS CAN’s goals.
Integration and Capacity Building: Participate in ACS area/state management teams; facilitate success of the enterprise in assigned state; incorporate ACS staff and volunteers into campaigns; enhance external visibility; recruit and engage volunteers; train volunteers and ACS staff as needed.
Fundraising: Collaborate with national fundraising to plan and execute fundraising programs in Virginia; drive ACS CAN fundraising through events and donor development; use policy forums and other activities to build relationships with funders.
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion: Implement a state DEI plan; advance health equity and remove health disparities through state policy and appropriations processes.
Legal and Compliance: Follow ACS CAN policies, lobbying regulations; ensure Electoral activities comply with IRS and legal guidelines; manage contract lobbyists where applicable; complete administrative duties and reporting.
Formal Knowledge
Bachelor’s degree in political science or related field required
Minimum 5 years of relevant political/policy campaign experience required
Detailed knowledge of the legislative process and political landscape; ability to adapt to state government environments
Other Skills
Health policy knowledge preferred
Fundraising experience preferred
Ability to draft bill or amendment language preferred
Excellent written, oral, interpersonal, computer, and mobile skills required
Action-oriented, able to work independently and as part of a team
Ability to work in complex, changing environments; strong relationship-building with diverse stakeholders
Ability to manage fast-paced, time-sensitive matters with internal and external constituents
Ability to complete work accurately and on time; proficient with available technology
Compensation and Benefits The starting rate is $81,000 to $91,000. Final offer based on experience and skills. Travel may be required.
