Overview

Director of Environmental Health & Stewardship leads the Safety & Risk Management department, planning, coordinating, and implementing district-wide programs related to occupational health & safety, environmental health, emergency preparedness, and risk management. This role requires extensive decision-making discretion and supervision of programs and staff to ensure safety of students, staff, facilities, and assets. Responsibilities

Adhere to all state, federal, and local laws, policies, and procedures Lead, manage, supervise, and evaluate assigned programs/staff in the district Plan, organize, and direct the activities and operations of the Safety & Risk Management department to ensure safety of students, staff, facilities, and assets Serve as the principal liaison with federal, state, and local regulatory agencies and ensure the school system is compliant Handle complex and confidential matters and respond to inquiries from staff, parents, and other constituents Implement management policies and procedures to ensure activities comply with applicable laws and regulations (EPA, OSHA, Fire & Life Safety Code regulations, FEMA and NC Department of Emergency Management standards) Review proposed legislation related to environmental health, occupational health/safety, environmental compliance, fire prevention, hazardous materials, and related issues Serve as the district's principal liaison in determining solutions for risk/safety management issues with partners such as NCPI Insurance, Mecklenburg County agencies, DOT, Fire Departments, EMS, and Red Cross Direct the daily operation of the district's property and general liability claims program Oversee asbestos removal/remediation, storm water, and playground compliance Direct accident investigations and establish inspection criteria; authorize corrective measures including removal of unsafe equipment or facilities Collaborate to investigate safety issues and perform risk assessments; develop protocols to mitigate risk Monitor and participate in budget development and administration Represent the district in media and agency meetings on environmental health and safety issues Prepare and present reports as needed Direct and participate in staff training Create an inclusive environment with positive communication/public relations Perform related work as assigned Minimum Requirements

Knowledge of principles, practices, and trends in safety and risk management, including safety, fire safety, chemistry lab safety, and asbestos management Knowledge of legal mandates, policies, regulations, and guidelines related to health and safety and risk management (OSHA, EPA, FEMA, Bloodborne Pathogens Standard, Fire & Life Safety Code, Hazard Communication Standard) Knowledge of educational organization goals, objectives, operating practices, and procedures Ability to maintain professional and emotional control under stress; professional demeanor Ability to learn and use specialized tools, equipment, or software related to business needs Ability to develop and monitor a budget Ability to direct and evaluate the work of others Ability to implement local, state, and federal rules into daily operations Ability to communicate effectively; strong written and verbal communication Ability to reason, make judgments, and maintain effective working relationships Ability to employ positive communication skills in all settings Ability to problem-solve using sound judgment Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding school system information Ability to develop charts, graphs, reports, and records for planning and strategy Ability to take initiative, work independently, and exercise sound judgment Ability to conceptualize, initiate, monitor, and evaluate programs Ability to work effectively in a deadline-driven, rapidly changing team environment Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree in environmental health, industrial engineering, environmental engineering, industrial hygiene, or a related field At least seven (7) years of related experience At least five (5) years of managerial experience Certified Safety Professional preferred Certified Playground Safety Inspector (CPSI) preferred Associate Risk Management (ARM) preferred Any equivalent combination of education and experience Seniority level
