Overview

Senior Principal Process Engineer at Freeport LNG (FLNG) – primary technical expert contact for process technology, SME reviews and approvals for management of change. Provide LNG process expertise to Operations, Maintenance, Production Planning and other business departments to manage process safety risks, asset and operating integrity, environmental emissions, and overall process performance and efficiency in compliance with contracts, policies, laws and regulatory procedures. The role includes development and liaison for LNG capital and brownfield projects in concept development, process comparison, detailed engineering, and operational flexibility.

As needed, stay informed of new technology and engineering developments, liaise with vendors and SMEs, provide strategic advice to the executive team, facilitate RCA activities, and support process testing. Support safety and environmental compliance and align with business objectives to ensure facility operations meet business needs. The role also involves coaching and mentoring on process work processes, standards, and technical development of process engineers.

Location/Travel Information

This position is based in Freeport, TX, with plans to relocate to the headquarters in Downtown Houston in Q2 2026. Frequent travel to company facilities in Freeport and other off-site locations as needed.

Duties and Responsibilities

Handle complex LNG process engineering work and provide subject matter authority for Process Engineering.

Provide process engineering governance at each project phase to meet Company Assurance requirements.

Independently develop Process Monitoring tools to monitor process efficiency and recommend improvements.

Review and provide feedback on frontline monitoring of process units, product quality, production quantity, and operations proficiency to stay within safe design and operating envelopes.

Mentor and coach across engineering and operations to drive system optimization, troubleshooting, commissioning, start-up, shutdown, normal/abnormal operations, and maintenance periods.

Manage and coordinate technical improvements and plant expansions to maintain efficient, cost-competitive operations.

Develop, review, and run computer process simulations in support of projects and troubleshooting.

Fully understand and apply the technical Management of Change (MOC) process for capital projects and routine facility changes.

Conduct Process Hazards Analysis (PHA) using HAZOP methodologies.

Ensure timely approval/closure of Engineering Service Requests (ESRs), MOCs, RCA reports/action items, and PHA actions related to Process.

Collaborate in a multidisciplinary team to define problems, scope work, plan, provide technical direction, and report status to management.

Participate in Pre-Startup Safety Reviews (PSSR).

Ensure regulatory inspections and documentation requirements are met and audit-ready.

Develop process basis, preliminary estimates, and schedules for project design scopes.

Support equipment criticality/risk analysis and validate equipment-sparing strategy.

Provide regular reporting on process surveillance/reliability KPIs and risk tracking with Engineering leadership.

Facilitate incident investigations and implement corrective actions to root causes.

Develop or update FLNG’s corporate engineering standards and benchmark against industry best practices.

Represent FLNG in Industry Engineering Forums/Programs as required.

Promote safety and environmental awareness through job observations and interaction with plant personnel.

Collaborate with Production Planning, Commercial Operations, Regulatory, Legal, and other departments as required.

May contribute to setting objectives, policy, identifying critical issues, and introducing new concepts.

Perform other duties and projects as assigned.

Essential Functions

Knowledge of engineering systems, calculations, applications, operations methods and materials; and use of engineering software.

Ability to interpret design specifications, standards, and contracts.

Clear verbal and written communication.

Perform research that improves process safety and reliability.

Troubleshoot and optimize process-related problems.

Understand, review, and approve piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), process flow diagrams (PFDs), Cause and Effects and process descriptions.

Education, Certification, and Experience

Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Engineering

Minimum Experience Required

20+ years of relevant experience

In-depth knowledge of LNG liquefaction export process engineering

Detail oriented, professional, and reliable

Excellent written and verbal communication

Proficiency with word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and presentations

Strong organizational and time management skills

Ability to prioritize to meet deadlines

Expertise in process engineering and multiple disciplines

Proficiency in HYSYS/Unisim process simulation

Ability to initiate and execute complex initiatives and drive programs across technical/business areas

Recognition as a thought-leader in the industry and a role model to technical staff

Physical Demands and Work Environment

Office environment with possible field, control room, or plant area exposure

Ability to wear PPE (fire resistant clothing, hearing protection as required)

Exposure to indoor/outdoor weather conditions, moving equipment, and variable noise levels

Ability to lift up to 20-50 lbs as needed and to sit/stand for full shifts; ability to maneuver in confined spaces or at heights may be required

Work Authorization/Security Clearance

Transportation Worker Identification Card (current or ability to obtain one)

HS&E Roles and Responsibilities

Support Freeport LNG HS&E Management System, including RAGAGEP requirements for fixed assets, Management of Change, and routine inspections to ensure safe operating conditions.
