Overview
This is a closed promotional opportunity open to regular, non-probationary San Bernardino County Fire Protection District (SBCFD) suppression employees only. Engineers
are responsible for driving, operating, and maintaining firefighting apparatus and equipment in compliance with County Fire Operations Directives, along with Local, State and Federal policies, rules and regulations. Engineer duties include ensuring that all apparatus they are assigned to are in safe operating condition; responding to fire alarms and emergency calls; maintaining the fire station and grounds; and participating in fire prevention activities and suppression training programs. Engineers may be required to periodically perform the duties of a Captain, and perform related duties as required.
Salary and benefits notes:
Bi-annual merit step increases of 2.5% up to the top step are contingent upon satisfactory work performance. Paramedic stipend is $710/month. Effective January 9, 2027, Firefighter Paramedics (salary range FFP) and Engineer Paramedics (salary range ENGP) shall have the $710.00 paramedic pay stipend converted into an hourly equivalent of $2.93 per hour and rolled into the first step of the salary range. Each subsequent step on the FFP and ENGE salary ranges after the first step shall be calculated based on 2.5% of the previous step. Salary listed on this job announcement is based on a 56-hour workweek per the current San Bernardino County Professional Firefighters Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).

Conditions of Employment
Physical Requirements:
Must be able to perform during high stress situations; hear in the normal audio range without correction; lift and carry equipment and individuals up to 200 pounds and wear self-contained breathing apparatus; vision correctable to 20/20; may be required to pass a color perception test; work in various environmental conditions; employees hired after January 29, 2002 must abide by the non-smoking provision of the SBCFD MOU.
Probationary Period:
A promoted employee must complete a new probationary period of 26 pay periods before attaining regular status; advancement contingent on satisfactory work performance on the current step with a Work Performance Evaluation and successful completion of Engineer\'s Taskbook.
Specialty Certifications:
Engineers may be required to obtain/maintain certification in Aircraft Rescue Firefighting (ARFF), Urban Search and Rescue, or Hazardous Materials Technician. All Engineers must maintain a valid CA and ICEMA Paramedic license or a CA EMT and ICEMA Certification; Paramedics must maintain CPR and ACLS; EMTs must maintain CPR. Engineers must possess/maintain a valid CA driver\'s license with a current DL546 Health Questionnaire. Out-of-state licenses will be reviewed for CA minimum standards with a Firefighter Endorsement.
Promotion to Fire Captain requires a non-probationary engineer with at least four (4) consecutive years of service as a Firefighter or Engineer with SBCFD.
Qualifications (as of the filing deadline)
Experience:
Three (3) years of experience with SBCFD as a regular, full-time Firefighter (as of the filing deadline). Limited Term, Apprentice, Reserve, or Paid Call Firefighter experience is NOT qualifying and must be clearly separated from qualifying experience.
Level II Certification:
Current and valid SBCFD Level II Certification (copies must be attached to application).
CSFM Certifications:
California State Fire Marshal Fire Apparatus Driver/Operator 1A & 1B (copies attached).
CA Paramedic or EMT license:
Current possession with ICEMA accreditation (copies attached).
Driver\'s License:
CA Class C with Firefighter Endorsement (A class A/B with DMV medical is acceptable). Out-of-state licenses with Firefighter Endorsement will be reviewed for CA standards (copies attached).
Examination Procedure
Step 1: ORAL EXAMINATION
The oral examination will be administered the week of October 13, 2025 to assess knowledge in engineer concepts, hydraulics, and department procedures according to IFSTA standards.
Candidates must achieve a passing score of 80% or higher.
Step 2: ELIGIBLE LIST
Candidates successful on the oral examination will be placed on the eligible list.
