Position Summary : Habitat for Humanity has an exciting opportunity in the mountain area of the Wasatch Back. Habitat for Humanity of Summit & Wasatch Counties, UT has been an active affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International for 30 years. By providing affordable housing, home repairs, skilled construction training, financial education, volunteer opportunities, and a discount furniture and construction supply store, the affiliate has helped transform thousands of lives in the unique communities of the Wasatch Back area. Habitat for Humanity of Summit is a mission-driven nonprofit dedicated to strengthening communities through affordable housing, volunteer engagement, and sustainable development. Our organization is supported by a diverse funding model that includes grants, individual donations, capital campaigns, and a successful fundraising thrift store with a retail component. We are seeking a highly skilled and mission-aligned Accountant/Controller to lead our financial operations with integrity, transparency, and strategic insight. Primary Responsibilities : The Accountant/Controller is responsible for the full spectrum of financial management, including accounting, budgeting, financial reporting, construction project oversight, retail operations, grant compliance, audit coordination, and process automation. This role ensures the organization’s financial health through rigorous analysis, timely reporting, and continuous improvement of systems and workflows. The ideal candidate will bring experience in nonprofit finance, construction draws, retail operations, and audit preparation, and will be proficient inQuickBooks Online. Experience withProcoreandAPI-based automation toolsis a strong plus. Key Responsibilities Handle daily accounting tasks like payables, receivables, reconciliations, and ledger updates. Maintain accurate and timely financial records in accordance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards. Ensure timely month-end and year-end close processes. Financial Analysis & Reporting Review budgets and actuals monthly to help departments stay on track. Perform forecasting and planning for growth and funding. Provide insights into program costs and retail performance. Develop cash flow projections and reserve planning. Prepare financial reports for internal and external stakeholders. Board Reporting Prepare and present comprehensive financial reports to theBoard of DirectorsandExecutive Committeeon a regular basis. Collaborate with the Executive Director to develop board materials, dashboards, and financial narratives. Respond to board inquiries and provide financial context for organizational initiatives and risks. Construction Project Accounting Oversee accounting for construction-in-progress (CIP), capitalized costs, and fixed assets. Manage draw schedules and submissions for construction loans and grants, ensuring timely and accurate documentation. Track construction budgets, monitor project cash flow, and coordinate with contractors, lenders, and funders. Preferred: Experience using Procore or similar construction management software for budget tracking and documentation. Oversee financial operations of the organization’s thrift store and retail activities. Support financial tracking for our retail store, including POS reconciliation and inventory analysis. Work with store management to improve pricing and operations. Grants & Fund Accounting Maintain accurate tracking and reporting records for restricted and unrestricted funds. Prepare financial reports for grants and audits. Assist with budgeting for grant proposals and financial narratives. Audit & Compliance Lead the organization's annual audit in collaboration with an external audit firm. Prepare audit schedules, supporting documentation, and financial statements. Serve as the primary liaison with auditors and ensure timely completion of the audit and tax filings (e.g., Form 990). Maintain and improve internal controls, financial policies, and risk management practices. Ensure compliance with regulations. Process Improvement Identify ways to simplify financial workflows and reduce manual tasks. Help integrate systems like QuickBooks, POS, donor databases, and payroll. Evaluate and recommend new tools or systems that improve financial accuracy, efficiency, and scalability. Collaborate with administrative staff, contractors, or volunteers as needed. Serve as a key member of the leadership team, contributing to strategic planning and organizational development. Provide financial training and support to department directors. Represent the organization in financial discussions with funders, partners, and community stakeholders. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field Minimum 5–7 years of progressive accounting experience, including at least 3 years in nonprofit finance. Proven experience in construction or builder accounting, including managing draws and capital project tracking. Experience with retail or, including POS systems and inventory management. Strong analytical and financial modeling skills; ability to translate data into actionable insights. Proficiency in QuickBooks Online is required. Experience with Procore or similar construction management software is a strong plus. Familiarity with API integrations and financial process automation tools. Familiarity with fund accounting, grant compliance, and nonprofit reporting standards. Experience managing or supporting external audits and tax filings. Excellent communication, organizational, and leadership skills. Commitment to the mission and values of the organization.
