Sompo has a unique opportunity for a 2026 Risk Control Trainee in our Denver, CO Office or WFH in Ohio. The Trainee Program is an 18-month program beginning in July 2026 designed to equip you with the essential business and technical skills needed to build a successful career in insurance. As a Risk Control Trainee, you will work alongside experienced insurance teams to gain knowledge of our business units, underwriting and risk control philosophy. The program includes on-the-job learning, workplace mentoring and directed self-study to prepare trainees to work as a risk control associate at Sompo International. Trainees focus on property risk analysis, reporting and estimating probable loss expectancies, with training in negotiation, risk analysis and relationship management. The Trainee Program serves as a launchpad for career advancement, helping you acquire the knowledge and skills essential for success in your field.
What can I expect as a Risk Control Trainee?
On-The-Job Learning: Trainees are immersed in day-to-day risk control activities, learning how to create and conduct loss control surveys, analyze loss trends, and provide risk control products and services to help reduce losses. You will have opportunities to work with experts to analyze risks and expand your knowledge.
Directed Self-Study: Professional designation courses provide technical knowledge of insurance operations and industry practices. Sompo supports continuing education by covering course fees and textbooks, offering time off to take exams, and providing additional compensation for successful course completion.
Career Development Support: Sompo focuses on developing its people through professional development training aligned with the trainees business unit.
Responsibilities
Work on property risk analysis, reporting and estimating probable loss expectancies. Engage in on-the-job risk control activities under the guidance of experienced professionals. Participate in surveys, loss trend analysis, and implementation of risk control recommendations. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver risk control services to accounts.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience
Sompo employees are bright and capable. We consider graduating seniors, recent college graduates, or those with 1-2 years of applicable work experience.
Additional Requirements
Bachelor’s degree, preferably in Engineering Genuine interest in developing a career in the insurance industry Clear written and verbal communication Solution-oriented mindset and data analytical skills Ability to work independently and collaboratively Adaptability to new challenges and fast-paced environments Integrity, reliability, and attention to detail Tech-savvy (Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint) Local to the desired office location or ability to arrange housing and transportation to support an in-office arrangement during the Trainee Program Eligible candidates must be at least 18 years old and authorized to work in the United States without restriction
Salary
Salary Range: $70,000 – $77,500. Actual compensation depends on location, qualifications, skills, and experience.
