Job Description Summary
Brown's Division of Biology and Medicine comprises The Warren Alpert Medical School and the Program in Biology, with multiple centers of education, biomedical research, and clinical care. The Division includes 148 biology/basic science faculty, 590 medical academic faculty, and 1,888 clinical faculty across four basic biology departments, 14 clinical departments, and two hybrid departments. The Division collaborates with seven teaching hospitals in the Providence area, HopeHealth, and Brown Physicians, Inc. The Division’s budget is approximately $250 million across more than 120 cost centers, with over 560 staff (over 800 with hospital partners).
Reporting to the Director of BioMed Finance, the Assistant Director of BioMed Finance provides advisory, operational, and financial services to programs within the Division, partners with department heads on budgets and new programs, resolves routine transactional compliance issues, and guides policy interpretation for the financial and administrative teams including graduate programs, The Warren Alpert Medical School, and clinical spaces. This role develops and supervises the financial operations team and interacts with many university departments to support leadership, responsiveness, and collaboration with a wide range of constituents including department chairs, faculty, administrators, interdisciplinary programs, and offices such as Financial Strategy & Planning, Facilities & Planning, Research Administration, Shared Services, Controller’s Office, Advancement, and the Office of the Dean.
The Assistant Director leads the operational areas of the Division’s Finance Office (currently 4+ FTEs), including a Manager of Finance Operations, Finance & Operations Specialist, Financial Analyst, and Financial and Administrative Coordinators. The position delivers high-quality financial management, develops operating budgets, and implements strategic initiatives to address the Division’s growing needs. It analyzes past and present financial data to inform future fiscal actions and supports leadership in coordinating operational finance for assigned areas. The role supervises staff and manages budget, revenue, accounts receivable, accounts payable (including complex issues for scholarships, gifts, endowments, and sponsored programs), and general ledger transactions, with an understanding of sponsored program impacts.
Qualifications Education and Experience
Bachelor’s Degree required; Master’s degree in a related field and/or equivalent preferred
5–7 years of finance/strategy experience (preferably in a medical, academic, or research environment) with a minimum of 2 years of managerial experience
Supervisory experience and team-building expertise
Experience with NIH research, animal research, and human subjects research a plus
Experience with complex academic program financial models a plus
High level of competence with computer technology (databases, spreadsheets, analytics, management)
Prior experience with a complex ERP system strongly preferred; Workday and/or Adaptive experience a plus
Or equivalent combination of education and experience
