The Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) is recruiting experienced, responsible, motivated individuals to serve as Corrections Counselors in Multnomah County’s correctional facilities. This role involves working with adults involved in the criminal justice system to turn their lives around and create a better future. Location: Portland, OR with two positions housed at the Multnomah County Inverness Jail; travel may be required to attend community meetings and services. Primary Duties Of a Corrections Counselor

Assess needs and responsivity factors (culture, learning style, gender, criminogenic needs) to provide comprehensive case management and planning for adults in custody (AIC). Prepare personalized case plans, monitor compliance, and adjust plans as needed. Develop and implement cognitively-based curricula and facilitate support groups for medium and high-risk adults in custody; provide training on curriculum content and best practices to community members and others. Administer needs assessments, conduct interviews, research history to determine appropriate services; provide referrals for medical and psychological evaluations as needed. Provide transition planning and intensive coordination with individuals, AIC groups, community-based providers, institution staff, and family members. Develop individualized transition plans for release to aid re-entry. Provide individual counseling on confinement, supervision, abstaining from crime, and living in the community; defuse escalating situations and provide crisis management in custody. Conduct alcohol and drug assessments and interventions; refer to treatment programs, monitor progress, and attend case planning meetings with treatment providers and residential program graduations. Develop and implement care management plans for adults in custody with chronic and persistent mental health disorders; consult with mental health professionals and provide referrals to community clinics. Participate in case planning meetings and advisory committees; assist with program evaluation and community engagement. Hold clients accountable to plans and agreements; assist with skill development; coordinate with community partners and secure resources for release; may transport individuals to inpatient treatment or community resources. Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in psychology, sociology, criminal justice, social work, or a related field. Additional qualifying experience may substitute for education on a year-for-year basis. Minimum of one (1) year of counseling and case management experience; familiarity with motivational interviewing and stages of change research. Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CADC I) credential by the time of employment. Valid driver’s license by the time of employment. Must pass a criminal records and employment references check. Preferred Qualifications / Transferable Skills

Master’s degree in psychology, sociology, criminal justice, social work, or a related field. Bilingual skills. Experience with the criminal justice system and working with law enforcement officers. Experience with high-risk populations (including AIC with mental health issues, sex offenders, and substance abusers). Familiarity with DSM-5 criteria and ASAM levels of care. Understanding of recidivism factors. Experience developing and facilitating skill-based and educational groups; familiarity with cognitive restructuring techniques. Ability to communicate with cultural competency. Screening And Evaluation
