Overview
CHILDREN’S FUNDING PROJECT
is a nonprofit social impact organization that helps communities and states expand equitable opportunities for children and youth through strategic public financing. We provide hands-on technical assistance and resources to help advocates, policymakers, public agencies, and funders identify and align funding, generate new revenue, and implement strategies to maximize impact. The organization is dynamic and seeks to meet the needs of the child and youth field and provide a healthy work environment. FUNDING THE NEXT GENERATION (FNG) is Children’s Funding Project’s California affiliate. FNG’s mission is to increase dedicated funding for children and youth in local jurisdictions throughout California, with a focus on ballot measures to create funds. FNG builds the capacity of city and county coalitions and leaders to work in the political arena, supports budget equity for children and youth in California, and develops educational materials to guide that movement. About the Position
We are seeking a politically sophisticated Director to lead and manage FNG’s movement-building, technical assistance, organizing, policy, and advocacy work in California. The Director will execute the strategy and goals articulated in current grants, supervise a small California-based staff and consultant team, and ensure the effectiveness of FNG’s functions. The Director must provide political and policy leadership in California’s local budget equity work by building and managing a statewide network and movement; supporting diverse coalitions of advocates, organizers, elected officials, youth, and parents; and strengthening FNG’s role in transforming local investments in children and youth. The focus is on local public funding and organizing to impact local public investments. This is a full-time, exempt position reporting to the Chief Executive Officer of the Children’s Funding Project. California residency and in-state travel are required. Leadership
Provide strategic leadership for FNG by executing work plans and goals, maintaining and expanding a network of city and county coalitions/leaders, establishing partnerships, coordinating project deliverables, tracking progress, and guiding project evolution. Engage in ongoing learning about California’s state and local political, electoral, and legal landscape affecting local public investments for children and youth. Provide compelling and inspirational communication to stakeholders across the state about the value of investing in children and youth and the importance of public resources reflecting that value. Serve as the primary project champion and relationship manager for FNG’s internal and external stakeholders.
Supervision
Supervise, mentor, and train the Associate Director. Maintain and build the collaborative work environment of FNG including staff, the advisory board, and network of consultants, including the founder-in-residence. Recruit and provide technical direction to consultants supporting FNG’s work, including experts in polling, election law, politics, public finance, organizing, and communication.
Fundraising
Build relationships with, develop funding proposals for, and fulfill commitments to foundations, participants, and other investors in FNG’s work.
Training & Technical Assistance
Build the capacity of FNG’s California-based network through training, technical assistance, and related activities. Deploy capacity-building supports such as specialized cohorts for ballot or revenue planning; provide place-specific consultations; and offer individual coaching for key leaders. Analyze, synthesize, and share findings and best practices with California-based advocates, policymakers, funders, and FNG network participants. Promote and facilitate adoption of Children’s Funding Project’s services in California, including fiscal mapping and cost modeling.
Engagement in Statewide Efforts
Lead and coordinate FNG’s participation in statewide efforts to advance funding equity, positioning FNG as a partner and thought leader. Build strong relationships with partner organizations, philanthropic leaders, and policymakers to influence state-level policies impacting equitable resource allocation for children and youth.
Other
Collaborate on communications (newsletters, websites, reports), national and regional events, and technical assistance activities that increase impact. Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Experience
We are seeking individuals with the following: Experience
Policy and Politics: Proven track record in political strategy, policy, and organizing, including issue-oriented ballot measures and coalition-building with diverse allies. Strong interest in using the political arena to advance social justice goals, with emphasis on children/youth issues and local revenue strategies. Deep understanding of California’s state and local political processes, policymaking, stakeholder roles, and electoral dynamics.
Social Justice and Organizing
Commitment to justice, equity, diversity, and belonging, with the ability to demonstrate how budgets reflect these values and to work on behalf of under-resourced children, youth, and families through local political processes or organizing.
Management and Supervision
Experience managing remote staff and consulting teams, supporting professional development, mentoring, and training.
Knowledge
Degrees: Bachelor’s degree in social sciences, education, or related field; at least eight (8) years of experience in government, nonprofit, political, or human services sectors, ideally related to Funding the Next Generation’s mission. Master’s or professional degrees may substitute for up to three (3) years of experience.
Lived Experience
Preference for candidates with advocacy experience serving children, youth, and families, including drafting legislation, organizing voter outreach, forming issue-oriented coalitions, and budget advocacy, and understanding the impact of resource distribution on these communities.
Skills
Strong management, interpersonal, communication, organizing, and strategy skills; ability to build relationships across sectors; excellent written and verbal communication, including public testimony, persuasive speaking, facilitating meetings, explaining procedures, and creating presentations.
Qualities
Excitement for leading an emerging movement to expand local public resources for California’s children and youth; passion for learning about local politics; ability to inspire others; teamwork and willingness to learn from the founder-in-residence.
Location : Remote with travel; must reside in California. Compensation : Starting compensation ranges from $110,000 to $130,000, plus benefits.
