This position is located in Rosemont, IL, just outside of Chicago by O\'Hare Airport. It requires the individual to be in-person 2x per week and does not provide a relocation package.
Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer and collaborating closely with organization leadership and key committees, the
Director of Education & Research
leads the Education Team and oversees the planning, design, delivery, and evaluation of AANA’s in-person and online educational programs. This role drives the organization’s educational strategy, ensuring that programs are innovative, high-quality and aligned with AANA’s mission and strategic priorities. In addition, the Director provides leadership for AANA’s research initiatives, supporting the advancement of orthopaedic knowledge through oversight of research programs and related activities. The Director manages all facets of continuing education and research development, including curriculum planning, instructional design, faculty and partner collaboration, budget oversight and compliance with accreditation requirements. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Strategic Leadership & Organizational Oversight
Facilitates the development and leads the execution of the association’s educational strategy and ensures programs are in alignment with established goals and member needs. Directs and ensures the successful delivery of high-quality educational programs including but not limited to: Continuing Medical Education; Maintenance of Certification; non-credit educational programs, educational tools and resources Leads and manages the Education team including setting department priorities, coaching staff, and evaluating performance. Directs the development of future educational programs and the revision of current offerings for live and online learning environments. Directs the collection, analysis and reporting of educational program data, as required by members, funders, partners and stakeholders. Participates and contributes to the association’s strategic planning process. Defines and enforces overarching education strategies. Identifies high-level education issues and develops solutions. Ensures project timelines, deliverables, and budgets are met for all projects, programs and initiatives. Cross-Functional Project Leadership
Provides executive leadership and strategic input for the selection, implementation, and oversight of cross-functional digital platforms (e.g., learning management systems, abstract system). Provide strategic input into the RFP development processes for education (or multi-department) platforms, working in close partnership with IT, Membership, Communications and Finance. Accreditation, Compliance & Standards
Ensures compliance with ACCME and other relevant accrediting bodies. Directs the association’s reaccreditation efforts and pursuance of ACCME Commendation. Mitigates conflicts of interest and disclosure processes. Directs annual accreditation reporting and continuous improvement planning. Program and Portfolio Management
Provides executive direction and hands-on management/oversight of educational initiatives Provides comprehensive review, critique, and editing of course materials. Conducts a review meeting after programs launch to review participants’ evaluations and revise future programs and materials as needed. Oversees evaluation, design, and implementation of tools and processes used for program evaluations Annual Meeting Strategy & Leadership
Provides guidance to the Annual Meeting Program Manager and Committee. Works with stakeholders to ensure programming fulfills member needs and learning gaps. Financial Oversite and Resource Development
Oversees budget development for the education and research initiatives and ensures all financial targets are achieved; identify efficiencies and cost-savings that do not adversely affect quality education and research outcomes. Manages department budget in alignment with organizational and educational strategy. Ensures all projects meet performance metrics. Collaborate with the CEO, and education staff to help secure funding and sponsorship of educational initiatives (when appropriate). Stakeholder Engagement and Collaboration
Serves as the primary contact to the ACCME. Assists with the review and development of promotional and outreach materials for educational offerings Works with other disciplines and staff members as needed to help shape new products. Works with subject matter experts, developers, and instructional designers to ensure quality of learning materials. Oversees external vendor and consultant relationships related to education projects. Serves as the staff lead and project manager to the AANA/AOSSM Surgical task Force. Serves as the project manager for the MAST Skills Degradation initiative. Serves as the project manager to the MASS project. Other
Stays abreast of emerging trends in learning technologies, instructional design, management, leadership, and professional skills training; keeps informed about cutting edge technology, and is sought out as an expert, to provide advice in areas of education technology Assumes responsibility for individual and team performance by setting clear goals and expectations, tracks progress against goals, ensures feedback and addresses performance issues promptly Serves as a liaison to the various Task Forces and Committees. Other duties as assigned KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Exceptional written and verbal communication skills. Strong business acumen and project management skills. Demonstrated knowledge of ACCME compliance, Sunshine Act, maintenance of certification and related guidelines. Solid analytical, critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Ability to manage multiple projects, budgets, and resources simultaneously. Expert at collaborating effectively with members and volunteers at all levels. Strong supervisory and coaching ability. Extremely adaptable and flexible with sound teamwork and collaboration skills. Proficient in Microsoft Office and association management systems (e.g., Microsoft CRM/iMIS). Able to interact effectively as a communicative and active team member in a small office environment. Knowledge of adult learning principles. EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION
Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in education, business or related field (graduate degree preferred, CAE a plus) Minimum of 8-10 years leading an education/accreditation department. Hands-on experience in developing, planning, organizing, implementing and evaluating CME offerings in a variety of formats and venues. Experience with associations and specifically medical associations preferred. Minimum of 3-5 years’ experience overseeing Research related functions with an association. Experience with education related technologies and other resources necessary to develop and deliver quality offerings. PHYSICAL DEMANDS Nature of work requires ability to operate standard office equipment. Requires ability to communicate and exchange information, collect, compile and prepare work documents, set-up and maintain work files. WORKING CONDITIONS Work is performed in a professional office environment, the Orthopaedic Learning Center, other meeting venues and the Board environment. Position requires availability for extended hours plus non-traditional hours (weekends) to perform job duties.
