The Dean Provide executive leadership and vision for the college’s research and academic programs. Maintain excellence and accreditation in existing programs; foster new programs in emerging disciplinary areas. Engage in strategic planning, fiscal management, and accountability for college resources. Lead faculty recruitment, development, and evaluation; oversee student recruitment and retention. Lead fundraising from governmental, industrial, philanthropic sources, and university/community relations. Steward the college’s Endowment, including endowed chairs and program priorities. The ideal candidate will demonstrate leadership and engagement across academic, research, management, and university-wide initiatives. Academic Leadership
Formulate and promote a college-level strategic plan aligned with disciplinary excellence; advance innovative curricular initiatives; recruit and retain high-quality faculty; ensure a balanced portfolio contributing to the college’s vitality and research and outreach missions. Research and Innovation Leadership
Champion research excellence, shape growth in scale and scope of research, align with university priorities, promote transdisciplinary work, and foster collaboration with other colleges and the Office of Research, Innovation and Impact. Promote innovation, technology commercialization, startup creation, and partnerships with private sector and philanthropic organizations. Management Leadership
Plan and oversee budgeting; exercise fiscal stewardship; manage personnel policies and actions; maintain an organizational climate that aligns with the college and university strategic plans. University Leadership
Engage in decanal discussions, collaborate with campus units to enhance teaching, research, and outreach, and support broader institutional objectives as needed. Stakeholder Engagement
Represent and advocate for the college, university, and the field of optical sciences at local, state, and national levels. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Ability to create and sustain interdisciplinary research and education initiatives across university units. Strong interpersonal and communication skills for diverse audiences including students, faculty, administrators, alumni, advisory boards, and benefactors. Commitment to academic excellence at undergraduate and graduate levels. Minimum Qualifications
An earned doctorate and a distinguished record of scholarship, sponsored research, teaching, and service for tenured appointment in one of the college’s four major discipline areas. Proven capabilities in complex organizational management, including strategic planning, financial stewardship, budget creation, resource allocation, human resources, risk management, and decision-making. A strong personal record of research excellence with international reputation in a field aligned with the college’s major elements. Preferred Qualifications
Demonstrated leadership experience in a technically diverse optics/engineering/physics organization or academic unit. Experience in philanthropy. Rank and Tenure
