Overview
The Field Engineer (FE) works directly for the Superintendent and is expected to exercise judgment and discretion in making recommendations, implementing policies and procedures and handling a wide variety of matters in the field. The position is normally preparatory to becoming an Office Engineer or Project Engineer. The primary purpose is to proactively aid the Superintendent in frontline field management, with responsibilities including layout supervision, safety, quality control, and coordination of trades and subcontractors. Essential Duties
Project layout (surveying) in conformance with design and contract documents. Check concrete forms for accuracy and adequacy of construction, including all embedded items, before placement of concrete. Perform production trend analysis for quantities of work in place and report for the weekly and monthly schedule and cost control reports. Assist with quality control, site safety initiatives and coordination of trade partners as delegated by the project superintendent. May include directing a small work force to gain supervisory experience. Coordinate material deliveries by checking material requirements in advance and comparing with the delivery status. Inspect materials delivered to the job for quantity, quality and condition, and report on missing and/or damaged items. Assist foremen and trade partners with interpretation of plans and specifications. Oversight of trade partners, as assigned, and direction of workforces to gain supervisory experience. Participate in jobsite safety meetings, weekly safety audits, etc. Collaborate with the VDC team on VDC scope of work, execution plan and deliverables related to field operations. Review and navigate within the current 3D model viewing and scheduling software. Qualifications
A 4-year degree in Civil, Structural, Architecture, Construction Management, or related field. Must be a student at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities. 1 year of experience and/or a combination of education and experience. Valid Driver’s License. Strong communication skills. Computer software - Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Excel-based templates, ProjectSight, Primavera and AutoDesk Suite. Preferred Qualifications
Past internships in the construction industry are preferred but not required. Physical Work Classification & Demands
Moderate Work. Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Occasional walking, kneeling, sitting, crouching, reaching, stooping, reading/seeing, speaking, pushing, pulling, lifting, standing, and keyboarding; frequency varies by workflow. Walking inside the office to access files and equipment. Constant use of a computer and office devices; frequent communication with staff and stakeholders. Reading blueprints and taking/verifying field measurements. Climbing, balancing, stooping; exposure to high/low temperatures and noisy outdoor environments. Benefits
