Investment Accounting Manager
in our Worcester, MA location. Position is eligible for Hybrid/Flex work arrangement. This is a full time, exempt role. POSITION SUMMARY: The Investment Accounting Department supports the Investment Management division to properly account for and report on the investment portfolios of The Hanover Insurance Group. Responsible for day-to-day investment accounting operations and various internal and external U.S. GAAP and/or statutory reporting. Responsible for continuous review & improvement of operations & managing unanticipated situations. Requires significant interaction with senior & middle management throughout the company, including investment professionals, legal, external auditors & regulators. WHAT YOU WILL DO: Responsible for team oversight and review of complete and accurate accounting, schedules & reports required under various reporting standards including U.S. GAAP, statutory accounting principles, the SEC, and/or other regulatory requirements (includes financial statements, exhibits, disclosures, financial projections, and/or management reports) for both internal and external use. Prepare complex analyses and regulatory reports under tight deadlines. Proactively identify, research, and resolve accounting & disclosure matters affecting financial accounting and reporting, including new accounting pronouncements and related memos. Continuously review, evaluate, and improve team operating procedures and related Sarbanes-Oxley controls to ensure quality in financial information. Provide accounting & financial reporting support for rating agency surveys. May support capital markets and investor relations activities. Oversee investment accounting systems. Serve as subject matter expert with technology group or IT vendors to design, develop, maintain or enhance automated business systems. Participate in establishing policy & strategic direction for investment accounting applications, including prioritization and communication with customers, suppliers, and support areas (e.g., IT and vendors). Manage employees with a variety of skills, including supervisors; talent management including performance and compensation management. Communicate results and issues to upper-level management. Participate in team strategy development and implementation. May be accountable for financial / budgetary oversight for the applicable unit. WHAT YOU NEED TO APPLY: 2 - 4 years of prior management or supervisory experience 6+ years of experience in a related field or area of specialization Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent work experience required. MBA or Master of Science in Accounting or Finance preferred. CPA preferred. Advanced Microsoft Excel and Power BI capabilities preferred; Strong knowledge of policies, programs and techniques within unit or specialization Conceptual Thinking - Synthesizes facts, trends, inferences, and key issues in complex situations; recognizes patterns and relationships. Finance and Accounting Knowledge - Understands and applies financial and accounting principles to analyze financial results, track budgets, set pricing and report financials. Negotiation - Knowledge of negotiating techniques to obtain commitment while promoting mutual goals. Relationship Building - Builds cooperative relationships at all levels to accomplish organizational goals. Talent Management - Fosters development of staff, coaching, and training; sets performance goals and supports continual development. Physical Demands and Work Environment - Ability to use a PC and standard office equipment; fast-paced environment; travel as needed.
