Controller – Professional Services Firm

Alexandria, VA (Hybrid – 3 days/week in office) Compensation:

We are seeking a
hands-on, team-oriented Controller
to lead finance operations and help shape the firm’s strategic financial future. This is a high-impact leadership role with a clear path to CFO, as the current CFO is retiring. Key Responsibilities
Lead and manage a small finance team (2 direct reports) Oversee billing and invoicing for high-volume, multi-format projects (~450 monthly invoices) Ensure timely and accurate financial reporting using Sage Intacct Liaise with external tax and audit professionals Advise the executive team, including the owner, on financial strategy Support forecasting, strategic planning, and expert witness engagements Maintain compliance with internal controls and regulatory standards Qualifications
10–15 years of progressive accounting/finance experience CPA preferred Background in consulting, engineering, law, or professional services Strong understanding of billing/invoicing and revenue recognition Familiarity with Sage Intacct or similar ERP systems Experience coordinating tax and audit activities U.S. Citizenship required Detail-oriented with strong leadership and communication skills Comfortable in a fast-paced, high-volume project environment
