POSITION SUMMARY

The Recovery Support Specialist (RSS) is an individual who is either in direct sustained recovery or has been directly impacted by addiction. Using a motivational approach, the RSS assists clients in linking to appropriate recovery services based on their needs. The RSS also provides ongoing support to clients who have received recovery services, using evidence-based models. Services may be delivered in community settings, offices, and regional DCF offices.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Provide education on addiction recovery and facilitate linkages to these services.

Conduct toxicology screens and SBIRT (Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment) immediately upon referral during scheduled hours at each DCF Area Office. Toxicology screens will be conducted using quick read cups or a breathalyzer. Hair sample screens may also be conducted upon request.

Utilize the GAIN Short Screener (GAIN-SS) to screen for mental health, substance use disorders, and issues related to crime or violence.

Provide Recovery Management Check-ins (RMC) for clients up to six months post-discharge from substance use treatment. This includes frequent check-ins in person, over the phone, and via text, with the frequency decreasing as clients build recovery capital. Initial check-ins should occur within one day of discharge.

Proactively connect clients to local recovery resources, identify concerns or early signs of relapse, and re-engage clients in treatment as needed.

Assist clients in following their child safety plans.

Provide recovery education throughout all phases of recovery.

Support professional training, outreach, and public education activities, including representing the agency at community forums and serving on committees.

Document clinical activities accurately in client records as required.

Identify and support linkages to community resources that align with clients’ recovery goals, involving collaboration with clients, staff, and stakeholders.

Help clients identify their interests, goals, strengths, and weaknesses related to recovery.

Coordinate services provided by other community professionals.

Refer clients to licensed substance use providers based on screening results and agreements.

Provide reports on SBIRT findings to parents/caregivers and DCF.

Refer parents/caregivers who test positive and contest results to a licensed substance use provider for evaluation.

Continuously develop knowledge about the cultural backgrounds of the populations served and apply appropriate methodologies.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree in psychology, social work, or a related human services field is preferred. Experience in the substance use recovery field and/or lived recovery experience is required.

Must be able to work a flexible schedule to meet client needs and respond to crises.

Valid driver’s license required. Ability to operate a vehicle safely in the community based on program needs.
