About Fleet Division The Fleet Management Department (also known as Central Shops) provides fleet services to over 70 City departments with a municipal fleet of about 8,000 units. Central Shops handles asset management, maintenance and repairs, motor pools, fueling services, vehicle acquisitions and disposals, equipment specification writing, fueling, and more. It operates six facilities and maintains and repairs a range of vehicles and fleet equipment, from passenger vehicles to specialized equipment like fire engines and street sweepers. The department also manages administrative functions including procurement, finance, performance reporting, service level agreements, vehicle leasing and pool programs, legislative mandates, and strategies for a zero-emissions fleet. Job Type

Temporary Provisional. This is not a permanent appointment. A provisional appointee must participate in and be successful in a Civil Service examination and be selected through an open competitive process to be considered for permanent appointment. Provisional appointments may not exceed three (3) years. Position Description

Under general supervision, performs skilled heavy-duty mechanical work in the maintenance, repair, and overhaul of heavy-duty and off-road vehicles and power-driven equipment, such as diesel trucks and buses, firefighting vehicles, compressors, generators, graders, backhoes, tractors, small engines, and electric motors. Performs related duties as required. Essential Duties

Maintains, repairs, overhauls, and services heavy-duty and off-road vehicles and power-driven equipment using hand tools, power tools and machine tools. Designs, fabricates and welds parts. Maintains records of equipment mileage, service/repair logs, materials and parts logs, and equipment and parts orders. Responds to incoming emergency calls and may go to the site of breakdowns; may tow vehicles. Inspects, tests, and reviews vehicles and equipment as part of the preventive maintenance program. Diagnoses malfunctions using test equipment, manufacturers’ specifications and repair manuals, and observations in the shop and field to determine needed repairs. Orders supplies, parts and materials necessary for maintenance, repair and servicing of equipment and vehicles. Drives city vehicles and operates equipment to diagnose malfunctions and conduct final inspection of work completed. Other duties as assigned. Qualifications

Education:

High school diploma or equivalent (GED or High School Proficiency Examination). Experience:

A combination of journey-level experience and/or apprenticeship training as an automotive machinist or heavy-duty mechanic totaling six (6) years involving disassembling, repairing, overhauling and installing mechanical, electrical and hydraulic assemblies in heavy-duty and off-road vehicles and power-driven equipment. Experience must include use of machine tools such as valve resurfers, hydraulic and drill presses, lathes and grinders. License and Certification:

Possession of at least a Class C (or III) driver license at the time of application; ability to obtain a Class B (or II) driver license and Medical Certificate at appointment. Some positions require ability to obtain a Class A (or I) driver license with Medical Certificate within twelve (12) months of appointment; failure to maintain the required license may be cause for termination. Substitution:

Completion of a CA Division of Apprenticeship Standards recognized Automotive Machinist apprenticeship program as evidenced by a Certificate of Completion will substitute for six (6) years of combined work experience. Note on Work Environment:
