Lead Mechanical Design Engineer, Data Center Design Engineering

Overview
AWS Infrastructure Services owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure. We support all AWS data centers and the servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling equipment that ensure continual access to cloud services. We collaborate with software, hardware, and network engineers, supply chain specialists, security experts, and operations managers to deliver safety, security, capacity, and cost efficiency for customers. This role focuses on hands‑on mechanical design for data center environments, with in‑house ownership of engineering from concept through construction documentation. Key responsibilities
Work with internal teams to understand user requirements and translate them into mechanical designs. Develop data center mechanical designs and collaborate with other disciplines to create construction document sets. Create designs that meet quality standards and stay within budget. Specify appropriate mechanical equipment with regional vendors and manufacturers. Define site utility requirements in collaboration with local utilities. Ensure compliance with city/county requirements and building codes through coordination with local authorities. Review and approve equipment submittals. Define project scopes and provide technical support during construction phases. Work with commissioning teams to validate installation, operation, and performance of mechanical systems. Manage concurrent projects across multiple geographical regions and travel to sites as needed (travel expectations flexible). Collaborate with onsite field engineers, perform engineering evaluations, conduct mechanical systems audits, and support startup activities. Apply creative, practical engineering solutions and contribute to a collaborative team culture. Basic Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field with at least 4 years of qualifying experience. 6+ years in design engineering or construction related to mechanical systems (hydronics, air-side duct design, plumbing); 4+ years using Revit for BIM models and construction drawings. Experience applying local codes and ICC requirements, and familiarity with mechanical industry standards and methodologies. Preferred Qualifications
Experience with data center construction or related large-scale mechanical and power systems (industrial, medical, oil and gas, etc.). Experience with design review processes, development of design standards, and submittal review; ability to read and understand construction documents for all trades. Knowledge of performance‑based approaches to mechanical design; advanced knowledge of mechanical engineering systems. Experience designing high‑volume air handling, chilled water systems, economizers, and evaporative cooling solutions. Professional Engineer license (NCEES Record). About the team
