Chair, Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Medical University of South Carolina Charleston, SC The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) in Charleston, South Carolina, seeks an accomplished, nationally recognized academic leader to serve as its next Chair of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. MUSC and MUSC Health are experiencing an exciting period of growth with increases in extramural research funding, several new clinical outreach facilities, support for an expanding telehealth program, and a new Children’s and Women’s Hospital. The Chair will play an integral role in working with MUSC and MUSC Health to further integrate services across the state of South Carolina. MUSC, the state’s only academic health science center, consists of six colleges and educates and trains more than 3,200 students and approximately 900 residents annually. The University and its affiliates have annual research funding of approximately $359 million for FY24. As the healthcare system of the Medical University of South Carolina, MUSC Health is dedicated to delivering the highest-quality and safest patient care while educating and training generations of outstanding healthcare providers and leaders to serve the people of South Carolina and beyond. Patient care is provided at 16 hospitals (including owned and affiliated), with approximately 2,700 beds and four additional hospital locations in development; more than 350 telehealth sites and connectivity to patients’ homes; and nearly 750 care locations situated in all regions of South Carolina. In 2025, for the eleventh consecutive year, U.S. News & World Report named MUSC Health in Charleston the No. 1 hospital in South Carolina. The MUSC College of Medicine was the first medical school in the southern United States and the 10th medical school in the country. Today, the College is home to approximately 1,500 faculty members committed to providing excellence in clinical care and training 740 medical students, 38 master of public health students, and approximately 900 residents and fellows. The College is also home to a robust basic, clinical, and translational research enterprise, with over $280 million in extramural research funding awarded last year. Responsibilities

Lead the advancement of all key mission areas of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine: clinical service, education, and research. Partner with MUSC and MUSC Health to frame and execute the department’s strategic direction and integration of services across South Carolina. Provide leadership to the department that houses over 60 full-time faculty, 40 staff, and nearly 30 residents and fellows, with nine fellowships and five clinical divisions. Inspire, lead, mentor faculty, trainees, medical students, and staff; foster an inclusive and collaborative culture. Qualifications

MD or MD/PhD from an accredited institution with board certification in Anatomic and/or Clinical Pathology. Eligible for appointment at the Associate Professor level or higher at MUSC. Application Process
