Overview
Director of Environmental Health (0941 Manager VI) – San Francisco Department of Public Health (SFDPH). The SFDPH aims to protect and promote the health of all San Franciscans. The department emphasizes equity, inclusion, and diversity in its workforce and services. Responsibilities
Develops policies and procedures for all Environmental Health Programs; leads SFDPH’s environmental health strategy to ensure health protection. Directs the operations and staff of all environmental health regulatory programs (Food Safety, Hazardous Materials and Hazardous Waste, Healthy Housing, Solid Waste, Water Quality, Local Oversight Program, Site Mitigation for contaminated sites, Massage Parlors, Body Art, Tobacco Sales, Medical Cannabis Dispensaries, and the Air, Noise, and Radiation Program). Supervises related programs and staff in areas such as budget, IT, and disaster planning; addresses personnel and union issues. Ensures continuous quality improvement, and performance and service excellence; reviews and approves training; determines staffing levels for each program. Oversees environmental health assessments, health impact assessments, and data/knowledge management to inform protection efforts, policy development, and regulatory actions. Participates in budget development; reviews and approves the branch budget and expenditures; ensures Environmental Health fees are set appropriately and collected with proper codes. Oversees expenditure and revenue budgets of approximately $26,000,000 annually with ~150 staff and contracted personnel. Collaborates with SFDPH offices, the Board of Supervisors, and City Attorney’s Office on city legislation; participates in relevant conferences and meetings. Updates the Director of Health and the Health Officer on urgent environmental health concerns with potential city-wide impacts. Engages with community organizations, private citizens, industry, environmental justice advocates, and other city departments on environmental health matters; employs conflict resolution and ethical leadership. Required Minimum Qualifications
License/Certification: Registered Environmental Health Specialist (REHS) certificate issued by California Department of Public Health, AND Experience: Five (5) years of verifiable management experience supervising employees performing food, housing, general sanitation, or related inspection work; three (3) years in an environmental health agency. Experience Substitution: Master’s degree in Public Health, Health Science, Public Administration, or related field may substitute for one (1) year of the required environmental health agency experience. Applicants must meet minimum qualifications by the final filing date. One year of full-time work equates to 2,000 hours. Desirable Qualifications
Prior leadership experience in local Environmental Health in a California jurisdiction. Master’s degree in Public Health, Health Science, Public Administration, or related field. Experience managing budgets and developing local ordinances. Experience supervising a large staff. California Driver’s License.
