Overview
PCA is recruiting for a Plant Optimization Engineer based at the Miami, FL corrugated box plant facility. The Plant Optimization Engineer (POE) is a developmental program designed to hire recent engineering graduates (0-2 years of experience) into a rotational training experience to develop them into well-rounded employees and future leaders at PCA. This is a full-time, salaried position with benefits. The POE program provides hands-on technical training in Maintenance and Production, plus projects in process optimization and engineering support across plant functions. Upon successful completion, the POE transitions into a full-time role in the chosen career path at a PCA plant or mill with openings aligned to their skills and interests. Typical career paths for POE graduates include leadership/management roles in Production or Maintenance at box plants.
Responsibilities
Work closely with the assigned POE Mentor to stay on track and reinforce role goals. Rotate through Maintenance and Production departments, completing technical training in each area. Organize and implement moderate to large process improvements, problem elimination, and capital/expense projects focused on asset health and reliability. Recommend or implement innovative solutions to improve equipment, facility, and plant operations. Attend POE program conferences and assigned off-site training. Collaborate with other Plant Optimization Engineers, plant leadership, and operators to complete projects. Contribute to defining a career path within the POE program in coordination with mentors/managers. Know and follow company policies and procedures; share information to benefit the team and improve customer service delivery. Support PCA’s Commitment to Service by focusing on value-added strategies and keeping promises to customers.
Basic Qualifications
Bachelor of Science degree in engineering is required prior to starting the position. 0-2 years of engineering experience, including internships/co-ops in manufacturing or industrial environments. Ability to work first, second, or third shift during the plant rotation as needed. Self-driven and passionate about working in a hands-on, manufacturing environment. Ability to travel as necessary and possess valid travel documents (air and car).
Preferred Qualifications
At least one internship or co-op in a manufacturing environment is preferred. BS in Chemical, Mechanical, Electrical, Paper, Industrial & Systems, Manufacturing Engineering, or Engineering Technology; other engineering majors considered with relevant experience. Experience with AutoCAD, Microsoft Word/Excel/Outlook, and manufacturing systems (shop floor software, maintenance work orders) is preferred. Six Sigma, Lean Manufacturing, or SPC experience is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Solid interpersonal and communication skills to work with production teams and management. Ability to learn quickly and apply new knowledge. Strong verbal and written communication skills for cross-functional collaboration. Problem-solving, critical thinking, and the ability to meet deadlines with alternative solutions. Leadership potential or demonstrated leadership abilities. Ability to build relationships across levels and functions within the company. Team orientation and understanding of the importance of open communication.
