Astrion has an exciting opportunity for a

Composite Technician II

located at the

NSWC Carderock Facilities in West Bethesda, MD . Astrion has worked extensively with the team at NSWC Carderock where it has earned a reputation for on-time delivery of high-quality products tailored to the needs of its clients.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS / SKILLS

A high school diploma or GED.

ABYC Composite Boat Builder certification, or at least two years of demonstrated experience with hand lamination, vacuum assisted resin transfer molding (VARTM), pre-preg lamination in an industrial environment.

Experience planning, preparing, and executing composite manufacturing or repair projects with a team.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS / SKILLS

Five (5) years of demonstrated experience performing laminations in a boatyard or shipyard environment.

Five (5) years of demonstrated experience assembling or repairing composite hulls, bulkheads, or components using adhesive bonding and mechanical fastening; and/or five (5) years of demonstrated experience fabrication and repair of cored composite components.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Prepare molds by inspecting, cleaning, and applying wax or other release agents.

Select, measure, and cut fiberglass mat, cloth, and other composite materials according to specifications.

Mix resins and catalysts in proper ratios and apply them to the fiberglass layers on a mold.

Use rollers, squeegees, or hands to work the saturated mat and cloth into the mold, ensuring the removal of all air bubbles and wrinkles.

Spray chopped fiberglass and resin into molds using pneumatic chop guns.

Utilize advanced composite techniques like vacuum bagging and resin infusion when required.

Bond wood or composite reinforcing strips to the hull and deck structures.

Install stringers and flooring within the hull.

Conduct minor cosmetic and structural fiberglass repairs.

Measure completed parts with rulers and micrometers to ensure they conform to quality specifications.

Read and interpret technical documents like blueprints, work orders, and production drawings.

Work collaboratively with other builders, assemblers, and supervisors.

Follow all company safety procedures, including proper use of respirators, gloves, and other personal protective equipment (PPE).

Maintain a clean and organized work area.

Some travel may be required.

Ad-hoc support as required.
