Senior Specialist Underwriter
to support the strategic growth and profitability of their
West Region . This position is eligible for a
hybrid work arrangement , with occasional travel to branch locations and agency offices. Position Summary
As a
Senior Specialist Underwriter , you will take ownership of new and renewal underwriting within an assigned agency group, focusing on profitable risk assessment and agency relationship development across the western U.S. You’ll balance technical underwriting with strategic territory management, delivering best-in-class service and tailored solutions. This is a high-impact, high-visibility role ideal for an experienced commercial lines underwriter who thrives in both analytical and relationship-driven settings. Key Responsibilities
Underwriting & Risk Assessment Evaluate, quote, and negotiate new and renewal business submissions
Analyze policy applications, endorsements, and exposures in line with statutory, ISO, and NCCI guidelines
Assess complex risks and make appropriate coverage decisions within delegated authority
Monitor and manage exposure changes during policy periods
Territory & Agency Management Own and grow a defined group of agencies: appointments, development, production, and profit sharing
Prospect for new agency partnerships and evaluate existing agency performance
Plan and execute strategic sales and territory growth initiatives
Sales, Service & Relationship Management Conduct in-person and virtual agency visits to drive retention and new business development
Represent underwriting at association events and industry meetings
Promote carrier services including claims, risk control, and premium audit capabilities
Deliver presentations and support agency marketing efforts as a trusted underwriting resource
Leadership & Technical Expertise Mentor and guide less experienced underwriters
Collaborate on special projects and underwriting innovation efforts
Participate in form development, underwriting analysis, and data review
Serve as a subject matter expert within the company’s specialty program framework
Candidate Qualifications
Education & Experience: Bachelor’s degree in Insurance, Finance, Risk Management, or related field preferred
5–7+ years of Commercial P&C field underwriting experience with a focus on: Construction
Forest Products
Manufacturing
Oil & Gas
Strong knowledge of policy language, pricing strategy, and commercial coverages
Technical & Sales Competencies: Proven ability to manage agency relationships and drive profitable growth
Demonstrated territory management and external sales success
Familiarity with industry forms, endorsements, and loss analysis
Eligible to work in the U.S. and hold a valid driver’s license
Compensation & Benefits
Base Salary:
$123,000–$180,000 (commensurate with experience)
Bonus Eligible:
Company performance recognition bonus program
