Ophthalmic Technician

Working with faculty, Clinic Manager and Clinic Supervisor, we are seeking an Ophthalmic Technician whose primary role is to provide technician/clinical support to physicians. Secondary responsibilities include limited administrative duties such as responding to messages from patients and physicians and assisting with patient requests for refills, forms completion and prior authorizations. The Wilmer Eye Institute of Johns Hopkins University has an exciting opportunity to train for a career as an Ophthalmic Technician, no experience required. This program supports career paths beyond Ophthalmic Technician and suits pre-med students seeking clinical experience. No evening or weekend work required. This description includes specific duties, qualifications and employment information as provided by the posting. Specific Duties & Responsibilities

Clinical: Records patient history including chief complaint, ocular history, past surgeries, medical conditions, medications, allergies, learning assessments, falls risk and family history. Clinical: Checks pupil response to light and afferent pupillary defect; measures central visual field using Amsler Grid. Clinical: Instills eye drops under physician direction; measures and records visual acuity; measures intraocular pressure; performs Humphrey visual field testing and references for further testing as needed. Clinical: Performs OCTs, IOL Master measurements, Pentacam measurements, refractions, color vision and depth perception testing; screens for ocular motility disorders; uses slit lamp; conducts specialized testing (e.g., Bright field Acuity Testing, Potential Acuity Meter, pachymetry). Clinical: Maintains and sterilizes instruments; responsible for exam room and equipment maintenance; maintains refrigerator logs and sharps containers; ensures compliance with JCAHO requirements. Clinical: Takes fundus photos; assists with in-office procedures; compiles and enters data for clinical studies; may participate in other clinical research projects. Clinical: Teaches patients proper contact lens insertion/removal and handling techniques. Clinical: Performs ultrasound measurements of axial length; ensures quality in challenging scans; calculates intraocular lens power as needed. Clinical: Maintains patient flow and supports accuracy of test results and documentation. Nonclinical: Responds to Epic in-basket messages; assists with medication refill requests; helps obtain insurer authorizations for medications and procedures. Nonclinical: Supports front desk by triaging appointments and addressing patient questions related to technician concerns; assists in tracking forms (e.g., MVA, disability, FMLA). Nonclinical: Maintains general medical knowledge of ocular anatomy/physiology and related conditions; maintains COA certification as required. Nonclinical: Performs other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or General Educational Development (GED). One year of experience as an Ophthalmic Technician. Must obtain Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) from JCAHPO within 18 months of start date. CPR certification. Additional education may substitute for required experience; additional related experience may substitute for required education per Johns Hopkins equivalency formula. Employment details:
