Overview
Ophthalmic Technician - Satellite Office (Ophthalmology) - Johns Hopkins University Wilmer Eye Institute. This role provides technician/clinical support to physicians. Secondary responsibilities include limited administrative duties such as responding to messages from patients and physicians and assisting with patient requests for refills, forms completion and prior authorizations. The program offers training for a career as an Ophthalmic Technician; no experience is required. This position supports the clinic at JH Bethesda, with no evening or weekend work required. The program may also benefit pre-med students seeking clinical experience before applying to medical school. Starting salary and benefits details are provided by Johns Hopkins University and may vary by location and candidate experience. Responsibilities
Clinical
Record patient history including chief complaint, ocular history, past surgeries, medical conditions, medications, allergies, learning assessment, falls risk and family history. Check pupil response to light and afferent pupillary defect; measure central visual field using Amsler Grid. Instill eye drops under physician direction; measure and record distance and near visual acuity; measure intraocular pressure using applanation or alternative tonometers. Perform Humphrey visual field testing and refer patients for further testing when appropriate. Perform OCTs, IOL Master measurements, Pentacam measurements, and accurate refractions. Test color vision and depth perception; screen for ocular motility disorders; use slit lamp to examine eye surface. Conduct specialized tests (e.g., Bright field Acuity Testing, Potential Acuity Meter, pachymetry); maintain and repair clinical equipment as needed. Compile and enter data for clinical studies; participate in other clinical research projects as assigned. Teach patients how to insert and remove contact lenses and proper handling techniques. Perform ultrasound axial length measurements and interpret difficult scans; take fundus photos as needed. Assist with in-office procedures; maintain exam room supplies; ensure medication expiration dates are current; maintain instrument sterilization and room disinfection. Adhere to infection control and microbial safety standards; maintain refrigerator logs and sharps containers; ensure clinic practice complies with regulations. Non-Clinical
Handle epic in-basket messages and patient questions; process refill requests and prior authorizations for procedures and medications. Support front desk with triage of appointments and clinical questions; explain technician-related concerns to front desk staff. Manage and order medications for intraocular injections; assist with tracking and processing of forms (e.g., MVA, disability, FMLA). Provide input on templates and schedules to maximize patient flow and physician efficiency; maintain general medical knowledge of ocular anatomy and systemic/ocular diseases and emergencies. Maintain required ophthalmic technician certification (COA) and take on additional duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications
High School Diploma or equivalent. One year of experience as an Ophthalmic Technician; must obtain COA (Certified Ophthalmic Assistant) from JCAHPO within 18 months of start date.
