The Humanities Department of Wilbur Wright College, one of the City Colleges of Chicago, seeks an innovative, collaborative, tenure-track instructor. Primary Objective
Reporting to the Vice President of Academic & Student Affairs, the full-time faculty position conducts formal classes and meets all lab objectives, when applicable, for assigned courses. Full-time faculty teach and evaluate students and prepare and revise course syllabi and other educational materials. Full-time faculty will have demonstrated success in the classroom by developing and using effective teaching strategies that meet students’ diverse needs and engage students in critical thinking and problem-solving. Additionally, full-time faculty contribute to the overall operation of the College, support the mission of the institution, and employ the philosophical commitment of the community college environment. Designs courses and prepares syllabi with clearly articulated student learning objectives and outcomes that promote active learning. Teaches on-campus and/or online classes in accordance with the college's philosophy, policies, and guidelines. Creates an effective learning environment that fosters intellectual curiosity and helps students problem-solve using discipline-specific thinking strategies; demonstrates excellence in teaching and integrates new technologies. Supports students in reaching academic, personal, and career goals; fosters a respectful, diverse environment; models respect and builds student confidence. Employs a variety of teaching methods (lectures, discussions, demonstrations, projects, field trips) to meet diverse learning needs and optimize outcomes. Works individually with students needing additional support; provides regular, objective, timely feedback and records grades promptly. Uses formative and summative assessments to ensure learning and outcomes; develops assessment programs linking classroom work with external coursework. Stays current with innovations in the discipline related to pedagogy and technology; reflects on and refines teaching practice. Participates in professional development to enhance teaching talents. Attends departmental meetings and participates in campus and district committees; contributes to academic and professional communities and promotes collaboration. Adheres to CCC’s student-centered philosophy; fosters student involvement and commitment. Qualifications
M.A. in Humanities or Classics or Comparative Religions or Foreign Language literature OR Master’s degree with 18 graduate credit hours in related humanities disciplines. Other related degrees may be considered (e.g., Master’s in Art History, Film Studies, Foreign Languages, English Literature, Theater, Philosophy, etc.). Two to three years of college teaching experience preferred. Excellent verbal and written skills with the ability to communicate persuasively and diplomatically. Ability to work in a culturally diverse environment; experience with diverse, multilingual student populations; commitment to open access mission. Disposition toward developing CCC Academic Excellence Pillars competencies. Knowledge of Brightspace or similar LMS; online teaching experience or certification preferred. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications. Preference for or interest in Gender, Women's, and Sexuality Studies and/or Ethnic and Diversity Studies.
