Job Summary The Surgical Technologist II acts as a member of the surgical team providing patient care to the patients undergoing surgical procedures in all areas, including a variety of complex procedures, by assisting the surgeon with instrumentation. Under some supervision, prepares the appropriate instrumentation and materials for use during and on the surgical field, passing instruments, assisting with room turnover, and performs other scrub duties as directed. Essential Functions Under minimal supervision, provides surgical support to physicians and patients undergoing a surgical procedure in all surgical areas including some complex cases. Anticipates the needs of the surgeon by passing instruments, supplies and equipment in a timely manner. Adheres to all policies and practices for safe identification and handling of specimens and medications. Handles specimens and medications using correct technique and according to departmental policy and procedure. Provides information related to care/preparation of surgical instruments/equipment for sterilization/disinfection procedures. Performs the necessary surgical counts on sharps, small items, instruments and sponges with the circulating nurse prior to opening, during, and after closing the incision. Prepares the surgical field by opening correct supplies and preparing instruments and equipment needed for the scheduled case. Provides indirect patient care activities such as patient transportation. Maintains aseptic technique; actively monitors situations that could lead to a breach in aseptic technique. Ensures that equipment is functioning properly and immediately notifies appropriate personnel of any problems. Assists with restraining uncooperative/combative patient in a safe manner. Serves as a role model for Surgical Tech I. Minimum Qualifications Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities as well as possession of any required licenses or certifications is qualifying. Education:

Completion of an accredited program recognized by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting or formal structure surgical program. Experience:

Two (2) or more years of progressively responsible and directly related work experience License/Certification RQI Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support or Basic Life Support by American Heart Association (AHA) KNOWLEDGE Ability to apply judgment and make informed decisions. Ability to work independently. Ability to foster effective working relationships and build consensus. Ability to solve problems and identify solutions. Ability to speak/write effectively at a level appropriate for the job. Knowledge and theoretical understanding of normal/abnormal anatomy/physiology. Knowledge and understanding of surgical procedures to anticipate needs/request from surgeons. Knowledge of computer systems and software used in functional area. Knowledge of general safety procedures. Ability to use judgment to determine own work flow. Ability to provide appropriate care based on the needs of the individual taking into consideration age, culture, and developmental issues. Knowledge of normal anatomy and physiology, anticipates and responds to needs of surgeons by requesting instruments/supplies based on procedure and case progress. Ability to provide leadership and influence others. Skill in critical thinking.
