As we expand our innovation capabilities, we are seeking a highly experienced Director of R&D and Engineering to lead our engineering organization, drive R&D initiatives, and shape the future of our product line. About the Role
The Director of R&D and Engineering is responsible for leading the design culture, engineering standards, and development of CNC grinding machines from initial concept through post-assembly support. This role oversees R&D initiatives, manages concept development based on customer and sales input, guides the engineering team through detailed design reviews and ensures successful project execution using modern tools and engineering principles. Responsibilities
Machine Design and Development:
Lead the design of CNC grinding machines, including all mechanical, structural components, spindles, linear guides, dressers, bearings, electrical and software interfaces. Innovation & R&D:
Champion the development of new technologies that improve grinding machine performance, thermal stability, vibration reduction, and tool life – within cost and schedule constraints. CAD and Simulation:
Oversee design modeling, assemblies, and BOMs using SolidWorks; perform and review simulations to ensure component durability and system integrity. Prototyping and Testing:
Supervise prototype builds, conduct performance testing and drive iterative improvements based on real world results. Cross-Function Integration:
Collaborate with Sales and Operations to ensure full system and process integration. Communicate effectively with vendors and customers. Team Leadership & Mentorship:
Mentor junior engineers, design reviews output for accuracy and adherence to engineering standards, and build a high-performance engineering culture. Technical Support & Troubleshooting:
Provide on-site or remote technical assistance during machine assembly, commissioning, and field service. Continuous Improvement:
Lead the initiatives to improve machine performance, reduce cost, and streamline engineering workflows. Travel:
Visit customer and supplier locations as needed for technical support, design validation, or vendor qualification. Qualifications
8+ years of practical experience in machine design, with a focus on CNC grinding machinery or similar high-precision equipment. Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, preferred. Prior leadership or mentoring experience strongly preferred. Required Skills
Proficiency in SolidWorks (3D modeling, assemblies, drawings, and BOM); Familiar with AutoCAD 2D. Strong understanding of engineering principles, machine systems, and manufacturing methods. Hands-on knowledge of grinding machine technology and precision equipment. Experience with FEA and design for manufacturability. Ability to manage multiple projects and prioritize effectively in a fast-paced environment. Proficient in Microsoft Office and general business communications. Excellent technical judgement, attention to detail, and problem-solving abilities. Preferred Skills
