The Lead Energy Storage System Engineer is responsible for all aspects of battery energy storage (BESS) products and balance of plant system design for assigned projects.
Responsibilities
Lead and coordinate all balance of plant technical aspects of energy storage projects, including developing single line drawings and schematics, plan and elevation drawings, general arrangement and site layout, relay protection and control requirements, layouts for LV/HV equipment, conduit, cable, wiring, grounding, and control buildings. Serve as the technical leader for assigned engineering projects or programs, including schedule development and updates, supporting sourcing initiatives, planning and tracking design reviews, quality control/quality assurance, and contractor management.
Provide oversight and reviews of deliverables in the proposal/bid phase as needed. Responsibilities include estimating or reviewing design man-hours and materials, conceptual design engineering and BOM, directing designers and drafters, preparing proposal documentation, writing and/or reviewing technical specifications, supporting sourcing for vendor quotations, and developing assumptions, clarifications, and exceptions as well as technical responses.
Direct the efforts of engineers and designers. This includes writing equipment specifications and contractor work scopes, requesting vendor quotations, evaluating quotations, and specifying equipment such as energy storage containers, inverters, control & SCADA equipment, HV/MV circuit breakers, switchgear, disconnect switches, LV/MV transformers, MV/HV cable, and protection and control systems.
Serve as the single point of contact for technical issues for the customer and project manager.
Interface with customers and project team members for final commissioning.
Coordinate with sourcing and the project team on technical matters to meet project specifications, cost control objectives, and schedule objectives. Be accountable for team results to deliver a high-quality product to customer requirements on time and on or under budget.
Define processes and procedures, perform RCAs (Root Cause Analysis), implement corrective actions, and validate process control. Support quality and standardization initiatives.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering (BSEE strongly preferred)
6+ years of experience in industrial or utility LV, HV, or EHV substations, energy storage project design
Working knowledge of design calculations such as UPS or battery sizing and DC system component selection, auxiliary power sizing, conduit fill, transformer selection, circuit protection, control and power cable selection and rating, ground grid design, and lightning protection
Effective communication and interpersonal skills; ability to work in a team environment. The Lead Energy Storage Project Engineer must be creative and accountable for team results to deliver a high-quality product on time and under budget.
Ability and willingness to travel up to 20% of the time, domestically and internationally, for meetings, troubleshooting, and on-site commissioning support. Compliance with GE travel and tax policies is required.
Desired Characteristics
Familiarity and experience with grid interconnection agreements
Professional Engineer License
Knowledge of IEEE or IEC standards and the ability to engineer design packages when customer specifications are not clear
Field-testing and commissioning experience with safe work habits; troubleshooting capability; experience installing and operating power equipment is a plus
Ability to develop and implement standards and structured programs
Strong customer presence with demonstrated commercial experience such as project management
Compensation and Benefits The salary range for this position is 98,400.00 - 131,200.00 - 164,000.00 USD annual. The specific salary offered may be influenced by experience, education, and work location. This position is eligible for a performance bonus.
