Summary

The pathology medical secretary will work in the LABORATORY department at Tift Regional Medical Center. This is a Full Time position with a Daytime shift.

Responsibilities

  • Securely managing patient files promptly, including typing, filing, and maintaining pathology reports allowing for retrieval of information in a timely manner. Distribute copies of pathology reports upon request. Responsible for seeing that all pathology reports are sent to the appropriate physicians' offices.
  • Responsible for accurate and timely handling, preparation, and transfer of pathology specimens for testing, storage, or review.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of the medico-legal implications and responsibilities of patient records to protect the patient and hospital. Assures security of departmental files and shows no evidence of breach of confidentiality. Releases confidential information only in accordance with hospital policy.
  • Operates designated work processing, dictation and transcription equipment as directed to complete assignments. Transcribing medical dictations into formal reports with the ability to understand diverse accents and varying dictation styles while also maintaining accuracy and completeness.
  • Entering pathology data into patients' electronic health records (EHR) and other computer systems. Preparing pathology material for various conferences.
  • Maintaining an inventory of necessary pathology supplies. Manage resources effectively.
  • Interacting with other medical staff and verifying information as needed. Accepts changes in work environment well. Establishes office work priorities. Handles telephone communications with courtesy, accuracy, and respect for confidentiality.
  • Demonstrated the ability to understand diverse accents and dialects and varying dictation styles.
  • Uses designated reference materials to ensure minimal errors.
  • Keeps abreast of pertinent federal, and state regulations and laws and Tift Regional Health System, Inc. (TRHS) policies as they presently exist and as they change or are modified.
  • Understands and adheres to: TRHS' compliance standards as they appear in TRHS's Corporate Compliance Policy, Code of Conduct and Conflict of Interest Policy; and HIPAA and TRHS policies regarding privacy and security of protected health information.
  • Demonstrates the ability to perform tasks that meet the age-specific requirements of the persons, patients, vendors, and staff that the employee is charged to interact with as required by the position.
  • Offers suggestions on ways to improve operations of department and reduce costs.
  • Attends all mandatory education programs.
  • Improves self-knowledge through voluntarily attending continuing education/certification classes.
  • Maintains required competency levels as identified in written exams, skills checklists, skills labs, annual safety, and health requirements as well as service excellence education hours requirements.
  • Cross-trains to better assist co-workers and to provide maximum efficiency in the department.
  • Volunteers/participates on hospital committees, functions, and department projects.
  • Reports equipment in need of repair in order to extend life of equipment and removes malfunctioning equipment out of service with timely reporting to the appropriate personnel.
  • Makes good use of time so as to not create needless overtime.

Education

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
