Position Purpose
A 'working' supervisor, responsible for directing the school custodial staff operations, employee performance/quality control, and anticipation of and response to maintenance and custodial needs.

Essential Job Functions

  • Responsible for training and supervising the school custodians, and assisting them in their duties when necessary.
  • Assists the Head Custodian, Custodial Supervisor and Principal (or his/her designee) by recommending work assignments for custodial personnel.
  • Responsible for evaluating building and grounds cleanliness on a regular basis.
  • Responsible for assigning individuals to cover special events.
  • Responsible for collecting and submitting all required custodial payroll documentation to the Principal (or his/her designee) and/or the district Custodial Supervisor.
  • Identify building and equipment repair needs, and submitting work requests to the Service Center.
  • Provide assistance to maintenance personnel when possible.
  • Responsible for preventative maintenance and minor repairs to buildings and equipment, as defined by the Director of Facilities (or his/her designee)
  • Performs related or special tasks as assigned by the Principal (or his/her designee) and/or the district Custodial Supervisor.
  • Assists in the annual performance appraisals of custodial personnel.
  • During the school breaks or in the event of an emergency, all custodial employees are subject to call for routine or emergency duties in the buildings other than their regular assignment.
  • Maintain a neat and professional appearance and demonstrate a strong work ethic.
  • Maintain regular communication with the district Custodial Supervisor, Principal and custodial staff.
  • Maintain diplomatic assertion of expectations to the custodial staff in order to coach and encourage.
  • Assist supervisors in administering discipline when necessary.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Equipment
Uses hand tools of trade and related power equipment, including brooms, mops, floor cleaning and waxing machines, vacuum cleaners, snow blowers, shovels, power mower and hand tools.

Travel Requirements
Travel to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.

Pay Rate
$17.69 per hour + $.50 shift differential

Work Schedule
8 hours per day, 260 days per year.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

  • Ability to follow oral or written work orders from supervisor, and to coordinate work with principal and others.
  • Ability to read, write and speak English fluently.
  • Ability to describe orally or in writing cleaning, maintenance or repair problems as needed.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff and others contacted in the course of work.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide all units of measure.
  • Ability to work in poor weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, or snow.
  • Ability to work above ground from ladders and automatic lifts.
  • Ability to perform work according to standard procedures and schedule set forth by supervisor(s).
  • Ability to wear all appropriate safety gear, including masks.
  • Ability to comply with the school district's chemical hygiene program and follow MSDS sheets.
  • Ability to follow all applicable safety rules, procedures and regulations governing the proper use of tools and power equipment.

Education

  • High School Diploma or GED.

Experience

  • Previous experience in custodial responsibilities is preferred.
  • Previous experience in management is preferred.
