Overview
Works under the supervision of the Director of Resident Services and the Fitness Manager. The Fitness Specialist plans, implements, and evaluates programs for healthcare and independent living residents. Instructs a variety of fitness classes and programs that separately or combined, meet the basic fitness components flexibility, muscular strength and cardiovascular endurance, while addressing the variety of fitness levels of residents throughout the community. Performs one-on-one fitness assessments and individual programs for residents. Cleans and addresses basic upkeep of equipment for classes, fitness rooms, gym, and the pool. In conjunction with colleagues, develops and coordinates programs and workshops that increase the resident's health and wellness education. Keep records of participation in all classes using sign-in sheets. Attends educational and/or certification workshops to keep knowledge current with health and wellness changes and to assist with maintaining varied programs.

What you will do

  • Uses free time to ensure proper and safe use of equipment, provide assistance when needed, ensure an immediate response should an emergency occur.
  • Fitness programs are consistently set-up and started in accordance with the monthly fitness/activities calendars.
  • Ensures an atmosphere is created for setting and meeting individual fitness goals through continuous motivation and guidance.
  • Demonstrates ability to perform the following general duties in compliance with the policies and procedures
  • Consistently requests additional supplies/equipment to enhance the fitness program within the approved budget.
  • Uses free time between fitness classes and resident appointments to assist other residents in the completion of their fitness programs; maintains a clean and safe workout (exercise) environment; ensures all Fitness rooms, Gym and Pool supplies are replenished; and updates resident records and fitness room usage sheet.
Qualifications

Education
  • Associates Degree, Exercise Science/Health & Wellness or Related (Required)
  • Bachelors Degree, Exercise Science/Health & Wellness or Related (Preferred)
Experience
  • 1 year Recent fitness experience in a long-term care or special population (Preferred)
Licenses and Certifications
  • CPR/BLS Certification - American Heart Association/American Red Cross/American Safety and Health Institute (AHA/ARC) (Required)
  • First Aid - American Heart Association/American Red Cross/American Safety and Health Institute (AHA/ARC) (Required)
  • Aerobics & Fitness Association of America - The Athletics and Fitness Association of America Upon Hire(Required) or
  • Certified Group Fitness Instructor (CGFI) - American Council on Exercise Upon Hire(Required) or
  • Personal Fitness Trainer - Athletics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA) Upon Hire(Required) or
  • Group Exercise Instructor Basic - Athletics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA) Upon Hire(Required) or
  • Primary Group Exercise Certification (PGEC) - Athletics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA) Upon Hire(Required)
