Bachelor’s degree

Experience in advising and/or counseling students

Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Ability to successfully work and collaborate with faculty, coaches, administrators and diverse student populations

Ability to match student learning needs with available resources

Ability to address identified concerns while additionally possessing knowledge of a wide range of learning strategies and study skills development techniques

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Counseling, Education, Psychology, Special Education, or a related field.

Experience in advising and/or counseling student-athletes.

Knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations

Master’s degree in Counseling, Education, Psychology, Special Education or a related field.

Two or more years of experience advising and/or counseling student-athletes in a Division I athletic program.

Job Description

The Student Athlete Learning Specialist is responsible for assisting students through special programs designed to meet constituent needs.

Job Duties

Reporting to the University College Assistant Dean and Director for the Athletic Academic Center, the Student Learning Specialist will provide daily assistance to academically at-risk students and those with learning disabilities. They will assist these students with everything from organizational and note-taking skills to test preparation. This individualized support system will lead to academic success and help develop confident, independent learners.

Job Duties:

Provide academic advising and support services to student-athletes on assigned teams as well as to student-athletes diagnosed with learning disabilities or learning deficiencies. This includes skill building, exam preparation, writing skills, etc.

Serve as a liaison between the Athletic Academic Center and the Office of Disability Services in order to develop and administer a comprehensive program to assess student-athletes for learning difficulties and disabilities and coordinate educational assistance and accommodations to allow student-athletes to perform successfully in college.

Coordinate initial diagnostic testing of student-athletes and/or gather necessary special education documentation from high school/previous institution

Assess and evaluate student-athletes’ academic needs using research and knowledge gained in the field to create a sustained and individualized support system to academic success and help develop independent learners

Monitor the progress of at-risk student-athletes

Communicate with Academic Advisors to keep them informed and involved with the academic and degree progress of student-athletes on their assigned teams. In collaboration with an advisor, reviews alternative academic options, dealing with scheduling conflicts, and similar issues. Assists advisors in preparing academic progress reports for coaches and Intercollegiate Athletics staff.

Help advisors develop class schedules and degree plans for assigned students, with an emphasis on University, Sun Belt Conference, and NCAA academic eligibility requirements

Work flexible schedules, must be able to work late evening hours and weekends
