About Williston
Situated at the confluence of the Yellowstone and Missouri Rivers, Williston, North Dakota, covers 23 square miles and is the county seat of Williams County. Located just 60 miles from the Canadian border and 18 miles from the Montana border, Williston is known as the “Western Star” and boasts a rich western heritage. The city is a regional hub for business, leisure, and economic development, with access to historic sites, world-class hunting and fishing, and national and state parks.
Due to its proximity to the Yellowstone and Missouri Rivers, Williston has historically been a booming commerce center, earning the nickname “Boomtown.” It has a deep history as a gathering place for early inhabitants, fur traders, explorers, and agricultural producers. Today, with the Bakken oil formation, Williston is a key player in North Dakota’s oil industry, which is the second largest in the nation. The city has experienced rapid growth, expanding by 210% since 2010, and is now the sixth most populous city in North Dakota.
Economically, Williston is driven by oil, agriculture, and tourism, hosting over 200 oil service companies, including several of the top ten globally.
CHI St. Alexius Health Williston , now part of CommonSpirit Health, has served the community since 1920, offering primary and specialty care including family medicine, 3D mammography, orthopedics, neurology, and more.
CommonSpirit Health, formed from the merger of Catholic Health Initiatives and Dignity Health, is dedicated to building healthier communities, advocating for the vulnerable, and innovating healthcare delivery both inside and outside hospitals.
