Senior Medical Technologist Performs duties as a technical specialist in their area of expertise. Precisely and accurately performs and evaluates a variety of technical procedures, acting as a technical expert and resource technologist. Utilizes accepted quality control techniques with the aid of automated, semi-automated, and/or manual methodologies. Develops, revises, and implements technical procedures in area of expertise with assistance and approval of section supervisor.

Job Description SENIOR MEDICAL TECHNOLOGIST

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Performs and results all automated and manual Hematology procedures. Troubleshoots and maintains Hematology instruments. Performs coagulation studies and CBCs with differentials. Performs body fluid analysis, including crystals, cell counts and differentials. Performs peripheral smears for blood parasites. Performs and results all automated and manual Chemistry procedures, including the ability to troubleshoot Chemistry instruments. Performs blood gas testing. Utilizes the Chemistry and Hematology section of the LIS computer system. Performs any other functions required for the smooth running of the Core Laboratory section of the laboratory.

Assists the manager of the technical area with supervisory responsibilities for the smooth operations of the functional section, including scheduling, purchasing, quality control, and performing specialized and highly complex testing. Assists and guides technical personnel in the performance of difficult tests and the analysis of unusual results.

Oversees teaching of MT or MLT students, develops and revises written and practical testing material. Provides training of new employees and competency for current employees to the section of the laboratory, including maintenance of records. Reviews articles or educational sessions to be presented to employees at staff meetings.

Develops, revises and updates procedures with approval of the section manager and acts as a resource and mentor for the initiation of these new protocols.

Performs and coordinates equipment maintenance, calibration and troubleshooting.

Maintains and submits Q.C. and Q.A. records to the manager.

Assists manager in CAP inspection process and checklist completion and in the process and submission of CAP survey results.

Organizes work during heavy workloads, multi-tasks to expedite patient care, notes critical results and calls them in the proper time frame. Maintains open communication with physician, nursing staff and co-workers.

Performs all Blood Bank procedures required for the safe issuing of blood, including cross matches, type and screens, issuing units, antibody panels, DAT workups, donor work-ups using ISBT labeling, preparation of components, and processing blood received from outside facilities. Utilizes the Blood Bank section of the LIS system. Assesses transfusion criteria and consults with Pathology and nursing staff to evaluate the need for a transfusion.

Education Required Bachelor’s Degree, Medical Technology or Biological Science Degree

Preferred Master’s Degree, Medical Laboratory Science or Specialty area of the Laboratory

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION Preferred MLS (ASCP) / MT(ASCP) / MLT(ASCP) / CLS-NCA, American Society of Clinical Pathology Board of Registry / National Credentialing Agency for Laboratory Personnel joined to form ASCP Board of Certification (BOC)
