The Department of Biology at Appalachian State University invites applications for a tenure-track quantitative ecologist at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin in Fall 2026. We seek an applicant with expertise in biostatistics, computational ecology, and/or ecological modeling. Research that employs quantitative/computational techniques with empirical field studies to address questions relating to evolutionary mechanisms, global change, or biodiversity/conservation and complements current departmental strengths is preferred. Position Summary

This position is responsible for the management and supervision of all aspects of fish culture activities within the Southeast Hatchery Group. This position works with numerous other programs in the Fish, Wildlife and Parks Division and the Department to maintain a high degree of program integration, and the management of water resources in an integrated approach. Goals and Activities: 60% A. Administration of fish culture activities, staff, facilities and budgets. 20% B. Coordinate and supervise hatchery development projects and hatchery maintenance in the assigned hatchery group. 10% C. Supervise and provide guidance to team members assigned to the group including permanent, seasonal and limited term employees and, as may be appropriate, to volunteers and external groups. 10% D. Coordinate a successful outreach program. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of fish culture processes and fish health management. Knowledge and understanding of status and condition of fish hatchery resources. Skill in developing and administering budget and work plan procedures. Skill in effectively directing the activities of a fish culture group to meet stocking goals. Wildlife Program Manager - Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians

The Wildlife Program Manager, under the direction of the Natural Resources Division Director, oversees a biological-based terrestrial ecology program necessary for the proper management of tribal wildlife, lands, and related ecosystems. Essential Functions: Program planning, development, and direction and supervision of program staff. Directs wildlife, vegetation, and ecological assessments, analyses, management planning, harvest regulation, policy review, and restoration activities. Develops recommendations for wildlife and vegetation harvest regulation, permitting and reporting processes, and species/ecosystem management planning. Maintenance and Operations

Some duties and needed skills include operation of electrofishing equipment and other standard fishery sampling gear, knowledge of ecological principles, basic statistics, population dynamics, related life sciences, chemistry and physics related to fisheries management. Working Conditions: Position requires team or dual lifting to 50 pounds and frequent lifting/carrying of more than 25 pounds. Physical factors include constant standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, driving and bending. Qualifications: Education: Master’s Degree in Ecology, Botany, Forestry, or related field required. Experience: Minimum two years’ vegetation and/or wildlife ecology management experience required. Certification/License: Must have a valid driver’s license and be insurable by the Sault Tribe Insurance Department.
