Overview

Safely collect blood samples from both in-patients and out-patients using proper venipuncture and heel-stick techniques. Responsible for maintaining integrity of blood samples; verify patient identification; assure safety and comfort of the patient by following established standards; adhere to Customer Service Excellence.

Responsibilities

  • Draw patients morning blood samples on assigned nursing units.
  • On Saturdays, perform blood draws on out-patients.
  • May be asked to assist the sweep phlebotomist.

Qualifications

  • Education and Work Experience:
    • Must possess a high school diploma or GED
    • Passed an accredited course including clinical experience or have 1 year of continuous phlebotomy experience

    • Certification Requirements: Phlebotomy Certification preferred

  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
    • Computer proficiency and technical aptitude with the ability to utilize Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel
    • Microsoft Outlook
    • Meditech (if applicable to position)
    • Epic (if applicable to position)
    • Performance Manager/NetLearning
    • Must be able to read, write, and speak English
    • Must be able to work independently and make independent decisions when warranted
    • Effective communication and tact with personnel, visitors, patients, physicians, customers, and the public
    • Flexibility, integrity, and teamwork
    • Ability to follow written and oral instructions
  • Other Requirements
    • Patient and customer relations skills, computer literacy
    • Ability to perform venipuncture and processing of lab samples for in-house and reference laboratory testing
    • Operate simple medical laboratory equipment such as a centrifuge
