Electrical Engineer - Buildings role at Stantec. Your Opportunity
Stantec’s Buildings team is on a mission to become the world’s leading integrated design practice. Our collaborators design multifaceted building projects focusing on sustainable design. This role develops and leads electrical design for projects under the guidance of a Lead Engineer/Designer, including evaluation, specification, and engineering of electrical power, lighting, fire alarm and other low voltage systems, with compliance to codes and internal standards. Tasks may include Revit and AutoCAD design, calculations, and field work. Your Key Responsibilities
Creates electrical design documentation for the electrical discipline using software such as Revit / AutoCAD and provides direction to junior staff via markups or other methods to convey design intent and expectations. Provides direct supervision to assigned staff to develop skills and abilities through guidance and mentorship. Leads in the development of a design through sketches, engineering calculations, electronic models, diagrams, and other visual formats. Prepares and reviews documentation in various project phases including site plans, floor plans, diagrams, and details. Coordinates with other building disciplines to ensure compatibility with the design intent, either directly or by guiding junior staff performing coordination. Performs advanced calculations of building elements and electrical systems using standard software and reviews results from others. Performs field work or reviews field work to assess existing facility conditions for electrical design development and for contractor work reviews. Leads engineering construction administration duties on projects, including review of shop drawings and submittals, responding to RFIs, and site observation/punch list reports. Leads evaluation and selection of building electrical systems/materials and develops job-specific discipline specifications. Attends project coordination meetings with internal teams and external consultants. Participates in value engineering and basic cost estimating exercises. Applies technical expertise while leading cross-functional resources to meet project requirements within established timeframes and budgets. Provides client consultation, drawing on professional expertise and knowledge of Stantec's services. Nurtures existing client relationships and proactively pursues opportunities for new business. Acts as a resource for staff to share technical expertise and trains junior staff on software, electrical/building codes, field work, and design processes. Maintains current knowledge of technologies and trends applicable to projects and markets, continually strengthening skills. Implements sustainable design principles into building design and surrounding environment. Your Capabilities and Credentials
Thorough understanding of electrical engineering concepts and the ability to communicate ideas clearly. Solid understanding of power distribution, lighting, and low voltage systems for built environments. Experience in the construction industry and knowledge of construction processes, including construction administration. Strong understanding of the relationship between drawings and specifications across project phases. Ability to apply sustainable design principles within projects. Ability to integrate design elements with other disciplines. Knowledge of applicable codes and standards such as NFPA, International Building Codes, and energy codes. Strong client communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to work on multiple overlapping projects and design teams while maintaining project execution and schedule. Ability to identify technical problems early and initiate corrective actions. Ability to review others’ work for accuracy and manage time to meet budget and schedule. Ability to direct, follow process, and provide feedback to junior engineers and designers. Ability to participate and collaborate in project teams and engage in creative and critical thinking. Ability to develop sketches, drawings, building programs, and other materials for use by junior engineers and designers. Ability to produce calculations based on project parameters (load, short-circuit, lighting, etc.). Ability to produce reports and studies and interpret findings of reports prepared by others. Ability to develop project-specific technical specifications independently from master specifications. Working knowledge of Revit and AutoCAD as drafting/design tools. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite. Experience with AGI 32, SKM, Newforma is advantageous. Working knowledge of low voltage systems (telecommunications, security, fire alarm) is advantageous but not required. Experience in healthcare, laboratory and industrial facilities is advantageous but not required. Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Electrical Engineering or Architectural Engineering with a lighting/electrical emphasis. Minimum 10 years of experience in the construction industry preferred. Professional Engineering license required. LEED Green Associate or LEED AP preferred.
