A resume and cover letter are not required. Register and Complete Two (2) Exam Components: The law enforcement exam components must be self-scheduled through the National Testing Network (NTN). Examinations are offered virtually or at physical locations across the United States, and the City of Seattle will pay for the exam. The required exam components include: Frontline National (Law Enforcement) Exam Public Safety Self-Assessment (Parts 1 & 2) Results are expected within approximately three weeks after application and testing completion.
Exam Notes Candidates are NOT required to complete the NTN Personal History Questionnaire (PHQ) for the Seattle Police Department. If you have taken the NTN exam for another department within the last year, you can send your scores to SPD at no cost via the “Department Add” feature in your NTN account. Questions? Passing this interview places you on an eligible list based on your exam scores. To become a Seattle police officer, candidates must complete additional steps including background check, medical, psychological, and polygraph exams. Background checks will involve a thorough investigation into your history. Ensure you meet the minimum qualifications listed below. Medical, Psychological, and Polygraph exams are required. The medical exam includes drug screening, medical history, vision and hearing tests, and a stress EKG. The psychological exam is conducted via Zoom. In-person medical tests are at specific Seattle locations. If all steps are successfully completed, an official offer of employment will be made. Preference Points Preference points can be applied to exam scores for certain qualifications, including veteran’s status, multilingual proficiency, human/social services experience, and prior Seattle Police Reserve or 911 dispatcher service. Instructions for requesting points are sent with final exam results. As first responders, Police Officers perform essential public safety duties, respond to 911 calls, and uphold the department’s mission and legal standards. Applicants must have at least 24 months of post-academy patrol officer experience with full police powers, responded to 911 calls, and meet other eligibility criteria. Corrections experience alone does not qualify for lateral entry. Job Responsibilities Maintain public safety, respond to emergencies, enforce laws, and promote community relations. Operate patrol vehicles, deter crime, investigate incidents, and collect evidence. Arrest or detain suspects, prepare incident reports, assist victims, and transport individuals in custody. Present evidence and testify in court. Shift work, including nights, weekends, and holidays, is required. Qualifications At least 20.5 years old. U.S. citizenship, legal permanent residency, or DACA status. High school diploma or GED. Two years of post-academy law enforcement experience with full powers within the last 36 months.
