Job Summary General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems (GA-EMS) designs and manufactures first-of-a-kind electromagnetic and electric power generation systems. We have an exciting opportunity within our Aerospace Mechanics Department for a Senior Warhead Design Engineer to join our team in Huntsville, Alabama. With limited direction, this role requires initiating and developing designs, procedures, and solutions to resolve advanced technical engineering problems in penetrator and warhead designs against traditional and non-traditional threats. The position may guide a team and serve as a primary technical contact on identifiable projects, including presenting results to engineering staff and external stakeholders. Duties and Responsibilities Assess and/or develop requirements. Primary point of contact for missile or projectile warhead design, including Electronic Safe and Arm (ESAF), with overall understanding of team status, plans, and issues. Support planning, budgeting, and status of warhead design tasks related to missile/projectile development projects. Facilitate rapid resolution of technical delays with clear communication to the chief engineer, program management, and IPT Leads as required. Collaborate daily with GA and customer engineering and program management teams. Provide documentation and deliver technical presentations as required. Support development, review, and editing of technical documents as required. Develop innovative but practical engineering solutions for penetrator or chemical warhead designs with economical and manufacturable products. Serve as focal point for technical communication within the Company and may represent the Company as prime technical contact to customers and/or government regulatory agencies. Present reports at engineering meetings, participate in program reviews, and consult on warhead/lethality/ESAF issues. Review or perform detail design or analysis with emphasis on warhead aspects of parts or subassemblies of missiles or defense systems. Develop Hydrocode analyses to predict warhead performance against targets. Provide expert guidance and consulting to other staff on challenging warhead engineering problems. Anticipate future engineering needs and required modifications to accomplish technical goals. Work with Manufacturing Engineering and Project Management to resolve design-related issues affecting production and to improve product design. Address complex technical issues with novel and creative approaches using advanced engineering concepts. May assume technical and engineering responsibility for the success of an identifiable project. Direct activities of design or technical staff and may lead a team of professional staff. Maintain strict confidentiality of sensitive information. Performs other duties as assigned. Job Qualifications Typically requires a bachelor’s degree, master’s degree, or PhD in engineering or a related technical discipline. Experience: 15+ years with a bachelor’s, 13+ years with a master’s, or 10+ years with a PhD; substitution with equivalent engineering experience is possible. Must possess DOD Secret security clearance with ability to upgrade to Top Secret if needed. Demonstrates extensive technical expertise in warhead engineering principles with ability to organize, plan, schedule, and coordinate workloads to meet milestones; some project leadership experience. Design experience with a preference for SolidWorks; extensive working knowledge of NX or CREO may be substituted. Strong understanding of advanced aerospace materials, including energetics, and manufacturing processes to produce innovative designs. Ability to quickly understand new concepts and apply them in an evolving environment. Strong communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills; capable of representing the organization as a prime technical contact and providing leadership to others. Customer-focused with the ability to formulate plans based on innovative designs to resolve problems. Ability to work independently and in a team environment; extended hours and travel as required. Desirable: Professional Engineering License, patents, published works, or invited presentations in engineering forums. Job Type: Full-Time Salary range: 128,130 - 229,358 Location: Huntsville, AL
