Overview
Executive Underwriter, Middle Market Life Sciences – Liberty Mutual Insurance. This role is part of a dedicated Life Sciences Underwriting team within the Middle Market, focused on delivering integrated multi-line Property and Liability insurance solutions for mid-sized Life Sciences companies (R&D stage through $2B insured product/service revenue) across biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, medical devices, dietary supplements, analytical laboratories, digital health innovators, cellular and tissue-based products, and related ecosystems. The position supports a hybrid work model (2 days/week in office and 3 days/week working from home) with travel up to 25% depending on opportunity geography. The Executive Underwriter partners with underwriting, claims, risk control, and other service professionals to address evolving Life Sciences insureds, agents, and brokers and to grow a profitable multi-line Life Sciences book. Responsibilities
New business underwriting for profitable growth: review, evaluate, and underwrite submissions; rate and determine premium and terms; prepare proposals for agents/brokers; obtain approvals as needed; negotiate deals. Post-sale servicing: work with Liberty Account Analysts and Client Service Managers, meet with insureds, and uphold Liberty’s value proposition. Portfolio management: manage brokers/agents and client relationships; ensure responsive service, conduct site visits and renewal meetings, and develop a long-term pipeline with agents/brokers. Identify, manage, and solicit a pipeline of opportunities for individual success. Articulate coverage differences with detail for Life Sciences niche space; stay informed on relevant legal, regulatory, and industry developments. Share technical knowledge externally as thought leadership; mentor and train other underwriters and partners. Contribute to business and marketing planning with data-driven insights from portfolio analysis. Participate in initiatives to grow Liberty’s Life Sciences Industry Practice and drive underwriting and process excellence; collaborate across teams (Distribution, Operations, UW Support, Claims, Actuarial, North America leadership). Support cross-functional collaboration and alignment across stakeholders to address Life Sciences client needs. Qualifications
Degree in Business, Risk Management, or a scientific field, or equivalent experience. Typically 7+ years of progressive underwriting or related experience; 10+ years often expected; minimum 5 years Life Sciences underwriting experience. CPCU or professional insurance designation preferred. Proven analytical ability to evaluate underwriting risks; strong knowledge of Life Sciences products, coverages, underwriting, pricing, risk selection, and market dynamics. Demonstrated track record underwriting profitable Life Sciences business; ability to communicate complex analyses clearly. Strong communication and interpersonal skills with internal and external stakeholders. Ability to understand complex technical underwriting issues and implement necessary processes/workflows.
