Overview

Advanced Practice Provider (APN or PA), Breast Surgery – University of Chicago Medicine. This position serves as clinical support for the Breast Cancer practice and has the opportunity to develop an independent practice within the UChicago Medicine Health System. Responsibilities

Obtains medical history and performs physical assessments. Orders and interprets appropriate diagnostic tests. Prescribes appropriate medications as set forth in delegation of prescriptive authority. Prescribes appropriate treatments. Screens patients to determine the need for hospital admission. Makes referrals to other disciplines as indicated. Participates in the management of outpatients. Supports faculty clinics. Prepares Breast Conference write-ups on a weekly basis. Places medication orders in Epic and submits prescriptions and refills via phone. Responds to triage phone calls, patient emails, and MyChart messages. Performs procedures in clinic (e.g., cyst/seroma aspirations, abscess drainages). Assists with coverage of operating rooms to pre-op patients for surgical cases. Assists with counseling for basic genetic testing and works with the Breast Center nurse to perform/order genetic testing. Develops an independent practice within Hyde Park and opportunities to develop independent practice at offsite locations. May provide cross-coverage to other General Surgery services. Designs patient education programs to support informed health care and treatment decisions. Assesses goals and outcomes considering benefit-versus-burden, safety, quality, and cost-effectiveness for the patient, family, and organization. Develops diagnostic strategies and therapeutic interventions to achieve the patient’s plan of care. Performs other related work as needed. Education and Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications: a college/university degree from an accredited school/college. Work Experience: minimum of 2 years of relevant work experience in a related job discipline. Certifications: current and/or eligible for State of Illinois licensure/registration; eligible to be privileged and credentialed through the Medical Staff Office (MSO). Licenses and Certifications

For Advanced Practice Nurse: current APN license in Illinois or eligibility to receive by start date; current RN license in Illinois or eligibility to receive by start date. For Physician Assistant: current PA license/registration in Illinois or eligibility to receive by start date; NCCPA certification by start date. Preferred Qualifications

An advanced degree (or equivalent) from an accredited nursing program or ARC-PA-accredited PA program; clinical competency, leadership and teaching skills; ability to conduct physical examinations and health assessments; strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills; ability to work independently and provide high-quality patient care.
