Location:
This position will be based out of the John Muir National Historic Site in Martinez, CA. The site includes a 9 acre fruit orchard and ornamental garden (House Unit), 350 acres of oak woodland and grassland (Mount Wanda Unit), and 1 acre gravesite and orchard (Gravesite Unit). ACE Members may occasionally be engaged with visitor services at other park sites within 10-20 miles (Concord, Danville, Richmond).
Position Overview:
The ACE Member will assist the National Park Service with interpretive programs and provide general visitor services. They will assist in planning events, working with school groups, creating interpretive projects, and staffing offsite events to promote the park.
Responsibilities and Duties:
Research the site's history and resources
Research the history of the NPS, its mission, and its evolution
Researching and interpreting sensitive topics affecting this site
Greet visitors in the Visitor Center and provide accurate information
Perform park operational duties such as opening/closing procedures
Research and present public interpretive programs
Participate in or assist with special programs and offsite events
Answer questions in person or by phone
Assist park rangers in leading school groups for the park's educational program
Staff offsite events (e.g., farmers market) and set up/break down stations
Rove areas of the park independently (homesite grounds/house, gravesite, Mt. Wanda)
Lead volunteer activities and safety talks
Staff the historic house, provide tours, and research resources and stories
This placement is designed for professional development and exposure to land management agencies and networking with professionals.
Schedule:
Tuesday–Saturday, 9:00 am – 5:00 pm (Pacific Time)
Position Benefits:
Living Allowance:
40 hours/week with a living allowance of $720/week, dispersed bi-weekly
Public Land Corps Hiring Authority:
May be eligible for federal hiring authority upon completion of service
Housing:
Housing is the responsibility of the member and is not provided by ACE or NPS
Computer usage:
Intern may use personal equipment onsite; NPS/ACE are not responsible for damage to personal equipment
Provided Training/Orientation:
Position-specific training and orientation; National Park Service training may include site safety, interpretation, and related topics
Qualifications
Required:
U.S. citizen or Permanent Resident per government contracts
Professional, positive, and enthusiastic representation of ACE and partner
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Willing to undergo and pass two-part criminal history check
Ability to perform essential duties with/without reasonable accommodation
Bi-weekly timesheets and term evaluations; mid-term evaluations for longer terms
Comply with the Member Service Agreement and dress code
Uniform on the clock and adhere to ethics and conduct rules

Preferred:
College degree or relevant experience (outdoor education, youth leadership); knowledge of NPS; ability to work independently; interest in public service; bilingual applicants encouraged (Spanish and Mandarin useful); valid driver’s license and insurable driving record
Physical Demands and Working Conditions:
Physical: sitting, standing, walking, hiking, lifting up to 40 lbs; exposure to varied terrains and weather
Vision: normal to extended vision requirements
Environmental: outdoor/indoor, variable conditions, summer heat
Noise: moderate
Environmental Conditions/Hazards:
May encounter extreme heat, rocky terrain, insects, wildlife. Work safely to protect self and resources.
Vehicle and Equipment Use/Safety:
If a vehicle is required, provided by the NPS; PPE provided as needed; comply with safety protocols.
